Indiana Klan leader pleads guilty in holding off TV news crew AUBURN, Ind. (AP) — A Ku said Berry was referring all calls to Klux Klan leaderhaspleadedguilty his attorney. Robert Love of Fort
to a felony charge in connection with allegations he held a television news crew hostage in his home after he became angry during an interview. Jeff Berry of Newville agreed Monday to a deal with prosecutors in which he pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit criminal confinement with a deadly weapon, DeKalb County Prosecutor Monte Brown said. Three other charges were dropped. The charges were filed against Berry in November after the confrontation with reporter George Sells IV and photojournalist Heidi Thiel of WHAS-TV in Louisville. Ky., in November 1999. The two told police officers that Berry refused to let them leave his home until they surrendered a videotaped interview with him. A man with a shotgun blocked the exit, police said. Berry’s trial on the charges had been scheduled to begin Tuesday. If DeKalb Circuit Court Judge Paul Cherry accepts the plea during a Dec. 3 sentencing hearing, Berry faces a maximum prison term of 10 years under state sentencing guidelines. Brown said. A man who answered Berry's home telephone Tuesday morning
Wayne. Sells and Thiel won a $ 120,000 civil judgment against Berry this year in U.S. District Court in Fort Wayne. An appeal is pending in the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago. Sells and Thiel were working on a report about the KKK in advance of three rallies the white supremacist group had planned in southern Illinois in 1999. Berry, imperial wizard of the DeKalb County-based American Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, invited them to his home to talk about how the image of the group had changed over the years, the station ’ s news director said. When Sells refused to give Berry the videotape after the confrontation began, he took the reporter’s microphone and light stand and gave the equipment to a woman who locked it in a closet, the news crew said. When the two tried to leave, a man with a gun walked in, locked the door behind him and cocked the gun, reports at the time said. Berry then took two tapes from Thiel's camera before allowing Thiel and Sells to leave, the TV station reported.
