SALT Continued from B1 yelling. Did I cry? Yes, I cried. But they were silent tears, private tears — a breathless sort of cry. "Years later, the thought registered that even as I crawled from that upper berth the morning we arrived in Cleveland, I was at the same time experiencing another kind of birth — a new birth, and a new life. I did not know what the future held for me, or who would take care of me or for how long. I just knew I was going to Mama’s house in Cleveland for a visit — a place where I would be safe and loved. "William Christopher Handy, the world-famous ‘Father of the Blues,' was bom Nov. 16, 1873, in a small log cabin on the west side of Florence, Ala. During the early decades of the 20th century. Handy helped nurture a musical sound that proved to be both mournful and moving — a sound this young Black musician would simply call 'the blues.’ The composer once described the expressive texture of his music as ‘the sound of a sinner on revival day.’ Handy's most fa-
mous composition, 'St. Louis Blues,’ was published in 1914, 28 years before I was bom. While he could not have written his song with me in mind, overthe years ‘St. Louis Blues’ also became my song — mournful, soulful, and a reminder of the trouble I'd seen in this sleepy but famous town on the banks of the Mississippi. As the clickety-clack of the traih’s mighty wheels put me to sleep that night. I was leaving St. Louis behind. But the ‘blues’ of loss, confusion, and bewilderment would remain part of a little boy’s heart and soul. ‘‘At that point, however, how could I possibly know what really was happening to me? I was only 5 years old.” (To be continued) Remember, “you are the salt of the Earth and the light of the world" ... you can make a difference .. you really can! Send comments and suggestions toe-mail: [email protected] or write to Salt and Light, c/o Dr. Benjamin, P.O. Box 18088, Indianapolis, IN 46218. Book has arrived Mama's Boy has just arrived. I
would be honored if you would purchase the book — one for yourself and one for someone you love. It is designed to build confidence in single parents and to encourage fatherless boys. If you have raised or are raising a boy by yourself, this book is for you. If you are going through a devastating divorce or you have “father” issues, this book will help you to feel better, not bitter. This is my third book, but my first hardback limited edition book commemorating my 35 years in the ministry. For MasterCard or Visa orders only, you can order by calling 1-800-847-9695. To order by check or money order, please write to Vision International Publishing. P.O. Box 18088, India-' napolis, IN 46218-0088.
