A revamping of the apartments must come soon, he said. "We would have to start before the first snow hits the ground,” added Franklin, anticipating further deterioration of the apartments. ‘The cost to repair the heaters is more than the board can bear.”

which provides an understanding about existing problems and a wholehearted plea for guidance to overcome such obstacles. After an agenda is passed out, Elder Rush motions the group to share their personal experiences. As each member revealed their reason for joining the alliance, the stories started to sound alike. At one corner of the room, a man talked about his son, a victim of police brutality. “He was the victim of abuse after abuse after abuse,” he said, recalling the numerous encounters with police. Another woman replies, “(This alliance) expresses my hopes and wishes.” Since July, the Leaf/Radford Alliance h^s made strides towards
ALLIANCE Continued from A1 addressing new cases of alleged police brutality. After Sylvester Peete Jr. allegedly hanged himself in a Marion County Jail a few weeks ago, his family contacted the alliance. “The implications (of the Peete case) suggest something else,” may have occurred in the jail, said Elder Rush. Another component of the alliance’s strategic plan involves joining forces with other groups such as the NAACP, Concerned Clergy, and the Indiana Civil Liberties Union. In addition, members are creating specific deadlines for accomplishing goals. During group meetings, public awareness remains a hot topic. Diverse media outlets are im-
portant venues for the alliance to distribute information about law enforcement and residents. Last week, Larry Leaf appeared on the Stan Solomon Show, and group members applauded Leaf’s presentation of facts and heartfelt opinions on excessive force. The Leaf/Radford Alliance will continue to hold group meetings to promote social justice and end police brutality. For now, however, the Labor Day Parade and a presentation at the Indiana Democratic Club are on the agenda. But, no one in the group will forget their mission to rectify and prevent injustices. A reunion ceremony was recently held to honor youth who achieved their goals through the program. “When we look at issues like Columbine, you need to be more proactive with how you work with young people,” said J.P. We need to rethink how we look at young people,” admitted Smith. Kenny Lacy, a senior at Arsenal Technical High School, notices the change in his outlook on life since joining Peacemakers Corps. “I took it back home to my community, and was able to use it with my family and friends,” said Lacy. “These are good life skills” He was voted president of the Peacemaker Youth Council, and
advises his fellow peers on peaceful conflict resolutions. “Now, I see myself mediating between friends that have disputes or a friend who has problems at home.” he said. Before joining Peacemaker Corps, Lacy remembers how his mediation skills were lacking. “I had a shorter temper. When I went through Peacemaker, I was able to calm down, stand back and relax,” he added. “I’ve matured a lot from this program. It’s been very good for me.” For more information about Peacemaker Corps call 681-5628.
