ART Continued from A1 in programs, which highlight individual skills. During Black History Month, the men competed in an art contest. Each participant had 16 days to submit pieces and collect prizes for their unique displays. The men took special care when selecting appropriate art supplies such as paint, chalk, and paper. The jail quickly became an art gallery and family members, friends, and inmates all admired the featured artwork. ‘Tve been anticipating another art project. It's one of my favorite pastimes," said Delbert Mimms. His liberation flag piece took four days to complete. It was only one of a collection of art that he submitted. Through artwork, "you see other great talents besides being in misery,” he added. The CCA jail is located at 730 E. Washington St., and functions as a private prison. The facility houses Marion County and Indiana Department of Correction inmates, currently serving 768 males. Although orange and blue uniforms separate the men, a common goal unites them around rebuilding their lives. “You are still human, and somewhere in the world you matter." said Sharon Bowers, unit manager of inmates, who attempts to motivate incarcerated men. “There’s a lot of creative individuals that are criminals," she said. “(Art) helps the inmates reclaim their self-esteem." While May Benson sat in the

CCA visiting area last weekend, she noticed beautiful artwork on the walls. The images celebrated African Americans, and seemed to bring life into the room as inmates welcomed their guests. "The community should know that although they did something bad. (CCA) let them put their art up." said Benson, acknowledging the positive change inmates are undertaking. Chaplain Ronald Brewer enforces positive programs at the jail, and inmates appreciate hi' guidance. "I enjoy the opportunity being here working with the guys." he said, recognizing the importance of daily church services, art sessions. and other recreational activities to support men in prison. His leadership has affected Ronald Moore, who collaborated with Chaplain Brewer for an educational "Stay Free" project.
