Ill’s Mike Davis will speak at Anderson’s MLK celebration Coach Mike Davis to be featured at citywide MLK celebration on January 15 The Anderson city wide celebration honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. will be held Monday, January 15,2001 at Noon in the Paramount Theatre Centre. This is the tenth year for this annual event. The planning committee is pleased to announce that the theme for this year’s event is “Celebrating the Fruits of the Struggle” and the featured speaker will be Mike Davis, head basketball coach at Indiana University. Coach Davis will speak about his struggles and journey to one of the most prestigious coaching positions in collegiate athletics. Mike Davis was bom in Fayette, Alabama. This is where Mike began his basketball career. He played under the legendary C.M. Newton and Wimp Sanderson and finished his career at Alabama in the Top 25 All Time Scoring Leaders for the Tide. Davis was a third round draft pick for the Milwaukee Bucks in 1983, but spent the next two years playing in Switzerland and Italy. Davis spent the 1988-89 season as part of the Topeka Sizzle of the Continental Basketball Association (CBA). Davis’ coaching career began in 1989 as an assistant at Miles College in Birmingham, Alabama. Davis became an assistant to then 1U head coach Bob Knight in 1997 and assumed the role of interim head coach for the 2000-2001 and 100th season of Indiana University Basketball. Davis is married to the former Tamilya Floyd. He is the father of three children, two-year-old son Antoine, 15-year-old son Mike, Jr. and 19-year-old daughter, Lateesha. A reception, sponsored by Delco Remy America, for the Celebration will be held immediately following the Noon service in the Paramount Ballroom. The reception will feature special presentations to community youths participating in Anderson Community School’s and Character Counts’ “Random Acts of Service” program. The Celebration and reception are open to the public and free of charge. Other sponsors that help make this event possible are U.A.W. #662, The Paramount Theatre Centre, Anderson Community School Corporation, Indiana Black Expo of Anderson, the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Commission, Anderson Federation of Teachers and the City of Anderson. For more information on the Celebration, please call the Paramount at (765) 642-1234 or 800-523-4658.
The officer comforted a little girl shot in the leg by a stray bullet. He remained with her until paramedics arrived, and even then she did not want him to leave her, he said. “I always make sure that I am courteous and professional, so that my demeanor will reflect the image of the department, rather than any negativity,” Webb said., “All officers have been trained well, and I never forget my i ? training. One thing I always sa>* is that 1 never bite unless I have to.” When asked about accusations of racial profiling by the department, Webb said: “Race is not a factor in an ordinary situation. Race only becomes a factor when we are looking for someone in particular, and have a description. “Whether someone is Black, white, Hispanic, green or red, I don’t become suspicious until I have reason to be. When a driver looks too young to be driving, and seems nervous, then I become suspicious. But just
••d ’■J '■k[ because four or five Black males are in a car, there’s no reason to 1 pull them over without cause. I don’t do it.” - He also explained that each of the department’s five districts , i; has its own unique problems, nbt regarding race. “One may have ' 1 problems with speeding,” he added. “Another with people ' always running stop signs, or cars without brake or head lights’. It doesn’t matter what color these people are. I know when I see a ; *- car in bad condition, and a or young, nervous driver behind the wheel, I begin to wonder if ‘ r anything is wrong, so I check it * out. But I only react on those things that are wrong.” 'I' Webb strongly believes that‘ c; third-year patrolmen (and beyond) should earn at least a '> $50,000 per year salary, for the 1 - job that they do, so that “we can, provide for just the basic needs of our families.” He is married to wife Brooke, and the couple has three sons — Philip, Demetrius, and Noah. .
