Deputy Mayor William Shrewsberry talks with Rufus Myers, the new executive director of the Indianapolis Housing Agency. Myers named new IHA executive director

Mayor Bart Peterson appointed Indianapolis native Rufus “Bud” Myers as executive director of the Indianapolis Housing Agency. Myers is currently the chief of policy and legislation for the Chicago Housing Authority (CHA). He succeeds former director Eugene Jones, who resigned in June. During the interim period. Deputy Mayor William Shrewsberry has served as interim director. “Bud Myers brings a great deal of expertise in housing issues and hands on management experience at many levels of government,” Mayor Peterson said. “I am very happy to welcome him home and I am confident his

leadership will help bring even more safe, affordable housing to our community.” At CHA, Myers is responsible for maintaining and coordinating communications with members of Illinois’ congressional delegation, the state legislature and Chicago City Council. Before joining CHA, he spent nearly 30 years as chief of staff and aid to five members of Congress. He served alongside current U.S. Rep. Julia Carson and former State Sen. Louise Mahem as staffer for former Indianapolis Congressman Andrew Jacobs, Jr. from 1968 to 1973. Myers later served as chief of

staff for U.S. Representatives Barbara Jordan (TX), Mickey Leland (TX), Cardiss Collins (IL) and Danny Davis (IL). He also served as minority staff director for the U.S. House Committee on Government Reform and Oversight. The Indianapolis Housing Agency is responsible for the design, construction, maintenance and management of housing lowincome, elderly and disabled persons. It is financed by revenues received from tenant rents and an annual subsidy from the Housing Assistance Administration of the U.S. Department and Urban Development.

Doctor turns medical practice into literary drama

Special to The Recorder

Medical doctor Isaac J. Myers II may be the next John Grisham. Myers, vice president of medical affairs for Advantage Health Plan in Carmel, blends his passion for writing with trained professional experience to conjure up literary drama with the release of suspense novel Silence.

He will be at Barnes & Noble Bookstore at Clearwater Crossing, 3748 E. 82nd St., on Friday from 7 until 9 p.m. to sign and discuss the

book.

Silence is the fictional story about Katherine Mills, the wife of a prestigious millionaire, who stumbles upon a secret tied to a string of unsolved murders. The information Mills possesses is so powerful it could destroy the lives of some of several prominent New York city men. Having developed his love for writing during his high school years, Myers convinced a school principal to let him write the school’s first newspaper. He later took a hiatus during medical school

until his passion resurfaced again in 1992. It was during this time Silence was bom — a tribute to all the special women in his life, especially his mother. The Harlem, New York, native has lived in Indianapolis since 1997 when he returned after maintaining a family practice in Springfield, Ohio. Myers is planning to write, the book’s sequel, The Find, and a biography, Mama / Didn 't-Na. in addition to an upcoming screenplay for Silence. “He is the most unassuming person I’ve ever met,” said a patient. “He is truly a renaissance

man.”
