NAACP commands Black voter turnout In presidential race Kweisi Mfume, President and CEO of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) commended African American voters for their record turnout in national elections. The civil rights organization financeda$12 million high-tech Get-Out-The-Vote (GOTV) campaign that utilized scores of volunteers, paid staff, a multi-media blitz, the Internet, telephone banks and comprehensive polling studies, resulting in the most massive GOTV

effort in the Association’s 91-year history. Traditional holiday exhibit begins with Santa’s helicopter The holiday season kicks off this year as Santa lands by helicopter at 5:30 p.m., Nov. 24 and visits with children until 9 p.m. at the Indiana State Museum. Santa’s helicopter landing celebrates the opening of Toy Soldiers Playground, the museum’s holiday exhibit which recreates the traditions of the former L.S. Ayres downtown store. Ayres memorabilia in-

cludes the SantaUmd Express train, costumes, the mechanical window displays, animated “woodland" creatures and items from the Tea Room. Author Ray Boomhower will sign copies of his new book, Destination Indiana: Travels Through Hoosier History from 4 to 7 p.m. on the museum’s first floor. The book features text and photographs of 25 Hoosier historic sites open to the public, and will be sold in the Museum Shop. The Indiana State Museum is located at 202 N. Alabama St. in downtown Indianapolis. Santa Claus and train hours throughout the season are from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through

I DBM roeolvot grant to Improve school air quality Tools for schools, an indoor air quality kit, gives Hoosier schools the means to improve the quality of air their students breathe, The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency awarded IDEM a $30,000 grant to provide Hoosier schools with the resources they need to address and improve indoor air quality through its own program called Tools for

Schools. The kit materials help schools carry out a plan of action at little or no cost using simple activities and in-house staff. The materials include checklists for teachers, health professionals and facility managers as well as background information, sample memos and policies. IDEM provides schools with guidance to help save resources through reducing absenteeism, weakening of ventilation systems, reducing the possibility of school closings, limiting potential liability problems and preventing strained relationships between school administrators, parents and staff.
