Lawmakers, treopers seek tougher penalties for methamphetamine _ *«- A state lawmaker and the Indiana State Police want the
of methamphetamine, also known as meth, speed, crank or ice on the street — or more accurately, on country roads, for it is largely a rural problem. Methamphetamine can be made, or “cooked,” and sold for 10 times the cost of its components, most of which can be purchased in local stores. Distributing the drug would be a Class B felony carrying a maximum 20-year sentence and $10,000 fine. Just as with cocaine, the penalties can be higher if the drug is distributed on or near schools or to those under age 18. Current penalties for possessing and distributing methamphetamine are lesser felonies.

Michael Dvorak, DGrainger, said felony charges equal to those for cocaine might help curb the spread of the drug, which has been more prevalent in the Southern part of the state. The stimulant has been part of Indiana’s illicit-drug culture for years, but only recently has its' manufacture and use become a significant and dangerous problem for law-enforcement agencies. Economics apparently is behind the upsurge in popularity
