It looks like Profyle’s ‘Nothin’ But Drama’ will be a hit »

THE SCOOP

Motown Recording artists, Profyle, dropped their album “Nuthin* But Drama” on Oct. 17. The Shreveport, La., group consists of Babyboy, Face, L’jai and Hershey. The group members are like brothers, but they are actually blood relatives. It’s a good thing too. We can only imagine the type of angst that was circulating through the group during the trials and tribulations that surrounded their first album, “Whispers in the Dark,” a solid set that got very little props. “We worked with Joe a lot on the ‘Whispers in the Dark’ album,” said Babyboy. “That album sold about 60,000 copies due to the Polygram/Universal merger. We were caught in the middle of all that. If you get a chance, go back and check that album out. It was a

really good album.” This time around, the group is getting a lot more PR and TLC from their Motown home base. In fact, their first single was produced by Teddy Riley, Dave Hollister’s favorite producer. “We initially ran into Teddy and he tried to sign us,” L’Jai told our reporter. “That was some years ago. The funny thing is, he remembered us when we came into the studio.” Joe also has a hand in this album. He co-executive produced the set with Kedar Massenburg. When Profyle heard “Lijur,” they knew they stumbled on a hit. “Well, I have to say, when I heard ‘Liar,’ I definitely knew there was something there," said Face. “I knew there was something special. I could definitely see people (listening to) different radio stations across the country calling in to request that song. We were a bit hesitant because we thought it was a little bit too forward.”

Well, something must have changed the fellas’ mind because “Liar” has been spinning hafibhh wide since its release this summer. But, wait, Kedar Massenburg does know a lil’ sum’ ‘em about smackin’ a hit ‘til it cries. “Kedar eased our minds quite a bit,” said Babyboy. “He told us it was gonna be all right. He went with his gut. At one time, it was the number one single for three weeks straight.” Call us optimistic fools, but we think Profyle’s “Nuthin’ But Drama” CD will sell more copies than its predecessor... way more. Newsbits People magazine recently published excerpts from Natalie Cole’s autobiography, Angel on My Shoulder. The singer details how her drug addiction led to theft, check fraud, and counterfeiting — and almost took her life. “If you’re going to write a book

about your life, either give up almost everything or don’t bother.” said Cole. The daughter of the late Nat King Cole, was hooked on heroin and said that her addiction was a culmination of unresolved things. “I was still walking in his shadow. I was adrift, without a dad and without a good solid relationship with my mom ... nurturing was just not something she was capable of.” • • • • • Master P is trying to do his part to make sure No Limit makes some mo’ noise this year. P recently announced that the next album in his fall line up is his “Ghetto Postage” joint, scheduled to drop Nov. 28. The 23-track album features appearances by No Limit soldiers C-Murder and Silkk The Shocker, Snoop Dogg, Tamar Braxton and more.

Less than one month after its release, “Supernatural Live: An

Evening with Carlos Santana and Friends,’’ has already gone bling bling, baby-baby. The newly plati-num-ized piece features Lauryn Hill, Everlast, Dave Matthews, CeeLo, Wayne Shorter, Rob Thomas and others.

The Baha Men, 98, Usher and Jessica Simpson have signed on to perform at the Nov. 21, Music With a Message: World AIDS Day 2000 benefit concert at New York’s Beacon Theater. Pink and “TRL” host, Carson Daly, will host the event.

Erykah Badu is headed for the island. The soul-soaked southerner will take a trip to the Rikers Island Correctional Facility in New York to perform for inmates. Flipmode Squad rapper, Rah Digga, played at Rikers earlier this year and rappers, Fat Joe and the late Big Punisher, performed there in 1998.

Boyz II Men is hitting the holiday radio festival circuit in support

of their recently released album. “Nathan Michael Shawn Wanya.” The R&B quartet is also planning to visit Japan in January. The group’s itinerary is still being hammered out. “Nathan Michiel Shawn Wanya” entered the Billboard 200 album chart four we£ks ago at No. S, and has since fallen to No. 40. • • • • • £ One of the greatest fightersTOf all time is still slugging it out. Muhammad Ali has filed a lawsuit against a New York City based clothing company. The lawsuit claims that Active Apparel Griup Inc. used his name and signature to market and sell athletic clothing without his consent. Ali is askjng for all gross profits made by the sale of the unauthorized merchandise as well as punitive damages. ?. The Scoop is provided by Electronic Urban Report.
