Former Ladies of the Supremes talk about the tour*

THE SCOOP

When people first heard that Diana Ross and the Supremes were going on tour in 2000. Bob Marley’s words sounded prophetic as ever, “Every thing's gonna be all right.” The Supremes were going to show people just how things were done. The Supremes were going to show us all how to love again. But things didn't go as planned. When Diana Ross announced that Mary Wilson and Cindy Birdsong were not going to be the Supremes singing back-up. folks frowned up their noses. From far and wide came. “Lynda Lawrence? Scherie Payne? Who are they again?" “It was good while it lasted. I had a wonderful time." said Payne of the tour. Lynda and Scherie had never performed with Diana Ross. Each was a member of the

Supremes in the group’s postDiana Ross incarnations. When asked whether or not she believed the tour's cancellation was a result of lackluster ticket sales, Lawrence gave an answer that fit the upcoming election season. “It was politics between the sponsors and the promoters, who both wanted Diana to do things that she was not willing to do. We don't know all the ins and outs of it. but we do know politics was involved. Diana did not cancel, they did.” If we were to ask EUR feedbackers what they believe was a deciding factor in the tour’s success, chances are most folks will say Mary Wilson’s exclusion from the tour. It left a dark omen upon the Supreme Reunion tour’s success, or lack thereof. We asked what the Supremes’ relationship has been like and it didn’t sound so great. “I haven’t seen Mary in a num-

ber of years,” said Payne. “She did sue our group, the Former Ladies of the Supremes, and lost both cases in court and the appeal. We passed comments to one another through mutual friends. I still love Mary. I have no ill feelings toward her and she said the same thing about me. Aside from that, I think Mary should have taken the (sponsor’s) offer and run to the bank with it. I think it was foolishness, ego and pride on her part. She said on TV it was not about the money, that’s why she turned the tour down. From the start, the tour was Diana’s. Then, the producers came up with the idea to make it a Supremes tour.” The ladies each told us that they too felt that Cindy Birdsong and Mary Wilson should have been beside Diana Ross. Upon a first hand look at the facts, the turmoil that brewed when Wilson turned down a $2 million offer to appear alongside Ross may have

stagnated the tour’s potential to and Scherie are currently a part of grow. a collective called, the Former La“The turnout probably would diesof the Supremes (FLOS), and have been the same,” said we wish them all the luck in the Lawrence. “The cancellation had world, nothing to do with Mary. Well, besides the obvious, abso“The audiences were wonder- lutely nothing at all. Well, except ful,” Lawrence said. “I read in an for the fact that they will both be article in which a Dallas reporter performing for Lifetime said our show in that city was only Television’s “Women Rock!: Girls half-full.
