First Annual Latin Grammys was a night to remember
jA.
THE SCOOP
The Electronic Urban Report has been in the business of bringing infotainment features to the masses for almost five years. During that time, our stories have been; in large part, about African-American entertainers, celebrities and what have you. In attending the First Annual j Latin Grammy Awards, our staff is ; broadening the scope just a bit. !After all. Black folks aren’t the only people that live in urban areas. The evening was filled with accolades, music and performances that made it a night to remember and reflect upon. Co-hosted by Gloria Estefan and Jimmy Smits, the Latin Grammys were right on the money, in our modest opinion. As you may have expected, Carlos Santana was kicking butt in every category he was in. Everytime he accepts an award, he forces the EUR to give him more
love. This year, he won two awards alongside Latino rockers Mana. One award for Record of the Year for his album “Corazon Espinado’’ and the second for Best Rock performance by a duo. Santana also received an award for a solo, for the way he ripped it on “El Farol.” “This one gives me inspiration to help make Spanish and English mandatory in California, Arizona, New Mexico and Miami,” said Santana as he hoisted his award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance. “And this one is to invite Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu to the Latin Grammys next year because all Latin music is really African music. We would like to include them. We would also like to invite the Aborigines and Native Americans to this event as well. These are invitations to the rest of the human race to participate in this.” Everyone is running around talkin’ ‘bout some “Oh, Latin music is exploding." But Latin music
has always been riding just below the radar screen. It has always been so close to blowin' up the spot, but now its time has come. There are many performers that should have been at this year’s Latin Grammys: Richie Valens, Selena and Tito Puente to name a few. But, Santana and all the other stars on hand gave props, post mortem and otherwise. “The first Latin Grammy should have been given to Richie Valens and Jose Feliciano,” said Santana. “When Santana came in, we merged different colors and rhythms. Not just African music, but the blues and other things. Somehow, we took Latin music all the way to Jerusalem and Japan. It’s not just Puerto Rico and Cuba anymore.” Some of the performances were missed by our staff, but of the performances we did catch, Shakira (winner in the Best Female Vocal Performance Award) had the audience jumping. 01’ girl got hips fo’
daze. Ibrahim Ferrer of the Buena Vista Social Club, was given an award for Best New Artist while Latin music’smatri arch Celia Cruz, won an award for Best Salsa Performance for her album “CeliaCruz and Friends: A Night of Salsa.” When she got up on stage with her blue dress and matching blue hair, we were like "Grandma, izzat you?” The original mambo king, Tito Puente, was given an award posthumously for his work on “Mambo Birdland,” which won for Best Traditional Tropical Performance. Another of the night’s big winners was Luis Miguel, whose album, “Amarte Es Un Placer,” won Album of the Year honors and Pop Album of the Year as well. Marc Anthony won Song of the Year for “Dimelo (I Need To Know),” but .was not on hand to receive the award. Emilio Estefan Jr. was given the Producer of the Year Award.
Newsbits • According to reports, pop star Sisqo is putting a halt to production on a new Dru Hill set. The new Dru Hill album, tentatively, had been scheduled for a November release. But, now the album may have to wait until Sisqo drops a second solo joint. • Family Tree Entertainment, management team for OutkasI, Mystikal and Donell Jones, threw a party to welcome BET to N. Y. In attendance were: Busta Rhymes, E-40, Washington Wizards’ Rod Strickland, De La Soul’s Posdnous and Maseo, Outkast, Donell Jones, New York Knicks’ Erick Strickland, Big Lez, Family Tree’s Michael ‘Blue’ Williams and Frank Roper, Interscope exec Shep Hopkins, up and coming Interscope artist Bilal and others. • Eminem and Marilyn Manson both came under renewed attack during a U.S. Senate hearing in Washington investigating
how violent imagery is presented to America’s teen-agers in the media. A bitter assault wds launched on the infamous rapiptr by Lynne Cheney, the former chairperson of an organizatidh called the National Endowment^ the Humanities. Cheney accused the sometime Slim Shady of jJrbmoting “violence of the most degrading kind against women,”'by examining the lyrics to the sotlg “Kill Me.” The song examines matricide. * ' L . ♦ • We’re sure many of our readers will agree that Mariah Carey looks good, but $10 million worth of fine? According to her “friends 1 /’ Carey has insured her body against injury while she shoots the fiftn “All That Glitters.” The movie is currently in production in Canadh.
