‘Black Diamond’ takes Angie Stone to the top of soul
THE SCOOP
Angie Stone is pne of the most enduring figures in the music industry today. She may Hot have been on the charts or on a lunch box, but this woman has been waiting in the wings for longer than most people could have endured. You or I would have given up long ago. But not Angie. She pressed on and then finally delivered with “Black Diamond.” The soul soaked set is one of the best soul albums from the past five years. But, five years is only a quarter of the amount of time it took Angie to realize her dream that was often deferred. “Winning my two Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards was like getting married.” said Stone. “I've endured, with the presence of the Lord, for over 20 years. They plucked me out of church when I was still in high school. I still con-
tinued to look for other things to excel in while in the industry, but I never gave up hope. "I always knew I would prosper in the industry. But. it would come in God’s time. I feel like a woman waiting to exhale. I finally got that off.” she said. Angie Stone is no overnight industry success story at all. Now. Stone is headed back to the studio to bring the pain once again. She is not only working on her own album, but other folks as well. "Actually, when I leave here I have to go put the final touches on my first duet with Prince," said Stone. "I plan on doing another one. We agreed to trade off. So, he's gonna be doing one with me for my album as well. It's a song that’s incredible and it’s called "You Are My Sunshine.'” One listen to Angie's voice and you will hearchurch all up in there. Stone told us that she has not forgotten her gospel roots at all. She is
one performer who is not going to wait until she falls off to wanna' go gospel. “I haven’t left the church," said Stone. "I’ve got some great gospel ideas. I’m going to be hooking up with Yolanda Adams sometime this year. I would love to work with Mary Mary.” Oftentimes, w hen an artist wins an award at an African-American music award show, some of their white contemporaries have a look on their faces as if to say. "I’m sure you would rather have gotten the... (fill in the blank). To those negative thinking morons. Angie only has this to say. “Obviously, this is the peak of my life because it took me so long to get here. The fact that I have actually been chosen by my peers means much more because everybody knows that the industry is very political. This means a lot to me because it came from musicians, so it had to be genuine." As many of you may well know.
Angie Stone is an artist on Arista Records, but she was brought on board by di va col lector Cl i ve Da vis. Now that Davis has his own label. Stone said she is an Arista artist first and foremost, but she may go to Clive’s new BMG imprint. "Clive has definitely been A-l in my career movement." said Stone. "If I don’t leave Arista for J Records I definitely plan on working with him in the future. But right now. ... I'm very proud to be an Arista artist."
