which feature fencing lessons taught by Olympic coaches. As they learn the fundamentals of fencing, the students are also learning how to think strategically and prob-lem-solve, how their actions affect their results, and how to'evaluate other people, overcome their own fears, and win and lose gracefully — important lessons for all young people. Many of the foundation’s fencers have gone on to excel at the sport, and the Smarts and SpencerEl have all already won medals at national and international competitions leading up to their selection for the 2000 Olympic Fencing Team. The Peter Westbrook Foundation is not just about fencing. Its many additional programs include tutoring from college-aged mentors, field trips and cultural activities, and a guest speakers’ series, all designed to continue opening up new opportunities for its young participants. For the young people at the foundation, including these new Olympic contenders, all of these lessons are paying off. In addition to their fencing careers, Erinn is a senior at Columbia University/Barnard College study-

ing political science, Keeth is a senior at St. John's University majoring in business, and Spen-cer-El is an assistant director at an independent film company. How wonderful to see a program like this making a difference for so many young people and giving talented athletes like the Smarts and Spencer-El the foundation that leads to Olympic dreams. And how inspiring to see Keeth and Erinn Smart. Akhnaten Spencer-El, Venus and Serena Williams. Tiger Woods, and so many other young champions reaching and exceeding theirown goals and setting new standards of excellence. Exceptional young people like these continue to remind all of our children they can do and be absolutely anything they can dream and work hard for. Marian Wright Edelman is president of the Children's Defense Fund and a working committee member of the Black Community- Crusade for Children (BCCC). In 1998, CDF celebrated 25 years of advocacy, service, and leadership to build a movement to Leave No Child Behind.
