Sprite’s ( urban’ commercial premiered at Source Awards
THE SCOOP
After all the smoke cleared from all the brouhaha over the Source Awards, there was one thing many people may have misse^ You guessed it. The premiere of Idts of new "urban” commercials. To advertisers of “urban” accessories, or what have you, buying ad space for the Source HipHop Music Awards was like Domino’s Pizza buying time on Super Bowl Sunday. One ad campaign that may have caught your eye was Sprite’s "What Are You Thinking” ad, which featured Mos Def, Pharoahe Monch, Beanie Sigel and Lord Finesse. During a recent event, we had the chance to holler at Pharoahe Monch and Lord Finesse about their involvement in the inventive ad campaign. “Me, Beanie, Mos and Pharoahe are campaign members of the new Sprite thing that’s goin’ on,” said Finesse.
The occasion at which we were fortunate enough to spot Pharoahe and Finesse was the Chops and Rocks presentation dinner for the Sprite campaign. The event was held at the Beverly Hills restaurant, Reign, owned by Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson. The “What Are You Thinking" commercial features five parts and each of the MCs minding their own business, but still being scoped. We wanted to holler at Mos Def and Beanie Sigel, but we were unable to catch up with them. But we were curious to know when the talented Pharoahe Monch will be droppin’ a hot one for us. “Mos Def and I are doing a song for the Lyricist Lounge II,” said Monch. “It’s gonna be a single. I’m in my bubble right now working on a new album. There’s gonna be a lot of big names on my album, but I’m not gonna say nothing until it goes down.” We were disappointed that
brother man wouldn't give us a hint about who was going to be on his album, but two Sprites later... “We’re looking at DJ Premiere, Mailman. You might be looking at Dr. Dre, Lord Finesse... more than a few big names.” That’s sounds hot like your block, but you can stop quivering in anticipation of ear-gasms. The untitled set is expected to drop sometime in the summer of 2001. Newsbits. • Just like EUR reported it, exclusively, several weeks ago, STEVE HARVEY has signed on as host of the morning-drive slot at LA’s lOOJTheBeat. Harvey, who stars in the top-rated WB TV series, "The Steve Harvey Show” and the theatrical feature "The Original Kings of Comedy," will kick-off his shift on Sept. 11. Listeners in Chicago remember him from doing mornings on WGCI-FM a few years back. Don’t be surprised if Black owned Radio
One, headed by Alfred Liggins, syndicates the show to other stations. Speaking of syndication, Harvey will also continue to host the weekend TV music/variety/talent showcase, “Showtime At The Apollo.” • As you may very well know, the DENZEL WASHINGTON star of "The Hurricane" got bombarded with negative press straight out the gate. In a recent interview, that appeared in the Toronto Globe & Mail, the film's director NORMAN JEWISON, finally got something off his chest. He commented on Universal Picture’s failure to sufficiently promote its own film and their failure to sufficiently respond to criticism of the film’s authenticity. “We were held to a higher standard than any film has ever been held... it was a money decision, an economic decision ... They kept telling me it was so good that it didn't matter we were coming out behind everybody else,” Jewison
said. • WHITNEY HOUSTON can sit on a record, break it, tape it back together and it’ll still go platinum plus. Her two CD collection "Whitney’s Greatest Hits,” an album that a lot of people sold short, has gone double-platinum in the US and quintuple platinum worldwide. • Up and coming star MEKHI (Mu-khy) PHIFER will star in the feature film “Uninvited Guest." The flick also stars singer WANYA MORRIS. MEL JACKSON. MARI MARROW and MELINDA WILLIAMS It’s be ing described as a suspense thriller. The film opens in selected cities Sept. 23. • "I ... somebody... I’m so in love witchu ... whatever you want to do ... izaall right wit' meeyeeyee." We just had to get that off our chest. Classic soul singer AL GREEN jus’ makes us wanna holler. You wi 11 be holleri n” too when you hear his "best of
anthology, "Take Me to the River.” But that's not all. Speaking of A1 Green, he will, also embark on a book and Ct* signing tour beginning Sept. IQ.I The first stop will be in Los Angeles at the House of Blues and Eso Won Books. ’ , ’ Other stops include: New York. Atlanta, Phi ladelphia and The Rock ‘N Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland on Sept. 13. Green will also embark on a live performance tour beginning Oct. 4, in Fresno, Calif/ Indianapolis is not on his tour list. • ESPN.com and HoopsTV.com announced a programming and marketing partnership that will produce original, co-branded content and link HoopsTV.com to ESPN's homepage and basketball section. Sources say the deal involved no cash, but that ESPN received an undetermined equity stake in HoopsTV. The Scoop is provided by Electronic Urban Report. Visit its Web site at www.EURweb.coin
