Two major church organizations consider realignment
LOS ANGELES (AP)—Two of the country’s largest ecumenical organizations are considering a realignment that could bring liberal and conservative churches together. Lines that currently divide Ifte National Council of Thurches and the National Association of Evangelicals already have started to dissolve and further changes could dramatically change the ecumenical landscape. ( The realignment would involve the National Council of "Churches, which traditionally has represented Anglican, Orthodox and African-American denominations, and the more conservative National Associaf Evangelicals, which repevaffgelical and Pentestal churches. The long-standing divisions tween the groups have weaked the voice of American urches on national issues and ps are being taken to form a oad-based ecumenical orgazation, church leaders said. “The old compartmentalized gmentation of the church is ying way to a new sense of sion and mission and presce of God in America. The jock walls are coming down i giving way to picket ces,” said the Rev. Kevin annoia, president of the Nanai Association of angelicals. The Southern Californiased evangelical group, which s about 30 million members,
formerly prohibited churches from joining if they were affiliated with the National Council of Churches; That rule, however, was recently rescinded. The NationalCouncil, meanwhile, voted earlier this year to disband the organization over the next three years if a new broad-based group is formed, said the Rev. Robert Edgar, the council’s general secretary. The council currently has about 50 million members among 35 member denominations. The form of a new organization remains undetermined. “We want to be humble enough to suggest that we don’t have all the answers and make room for the Holy Spirit to lead, guide and direct us,’’ Edgar said. “We want not to invite Roman Catholics and evangelicals to come to our table, but to have them see this as an opportunity to invent a new table.” A new organization likely would rally around common issues, such as fighting poverty, and stay away from divisive national issues, such as abortion and homosexuality. A summit scheduled for next spring is expected to bring a broad range of Christian denominations together to discuss a new broad-based organization. The Roman Catholic Church, with 60 million members nationwide, belongs to neither of the groups considering realign-

CHICAGO (AP) — Tipper Gore and Hadassah Lieberman, campaigning for their husbands in the Chicago area, met privately with about 40 leaders of a Muslim group holding a convention near O'Hare International Airport. Michelle Kucera, a spokeswoman for the Gore campaign, characterized the meeting Monday as an “informal meet-and-greet” between the wives of Democratic presidential nominee A1 Gore and his running mate, Joseph Lieberman. She said she did not know what was discussed at the hour-long meeting, which was closed to the news media. The two women met with leaders of the Indiana-based Islamic Society of North America at a hotel where the society has been having a convention.

Baptist group opens convention in Kansas City
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — About 9,000 black Baptists were scheduled to arrive in Kansas City this week for the National Baptist Convention of America's annual meeting. Economic development, crime and AIDS education were expected to top the agenda. r "AIDS “is a disease and not just a moral issue,” the Rev. Joe Gant, a spokesman for the convention, said Monday. Gant said he’d like to see
churches offer AIDS testing as a private alternative to public health facilities.
The Rev. E. Edward Jones Sr. serves as president of the Shreveport, La.-based organization, which includes churches representing about 5 million black Baptists nationwide. The group is not affiliated with the National Baptist Convention U.S. A. Inc., whose leader, the Rev. Henry Lyons, resigned last year after an embezzlement scandal.
