NAIROBI (IPS) — Two years after terrorist attacks on its embassies in East Africa, the United States government is still posting rewards for information leading to the arrest of key suspects in the bomb blast, which killed some 224 people and injured more than 5,000. The twin bombings of U.S. embassies in Nairobi, Kenya, and Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, have been linked to Saudi dissident Osama Bin Laden and members of his Islamic extremist A1 Qaeda group. But U.S. efforts to flush out the main suspect. Bin Laden, who is still in hiding in Afghanistan, and charge him have largely been fruitless. Speaking at the second memorial service, at the blast site in Nairobi, U.S. Ambassador Johnny Carson urged international cooperation in the fight against terrorism.
“This act of terrorism was intended to divide our countries and to chase us away. It has done neither,” said Carson. “We will continue with our resolve to stand for the things that are most important
for us.”
, Among those who died in the Nairobi blast were 167 Kenyan citizens, and 34 Kenyan and U.S. diplomats who worked in the embassy. Former U.S. Ambassador to Kenya Prudence qushnell, and Kenya’s former trade minister, Joseph Kamotho, who had visited her office, were also among those injured in the blast. The 10:30 a.m. bomb blast in the Kenyan capital took place almost simultaneously with one in the U.S. Embassy in Dar Es Salaam, which killed 11 people. The U.S. embassy building, located within the central business area of Nairobi, along with adjacent buildings, were extensively damaged.
