Neighborhood Association was among the many city residents on hand. “The future of our world Is being shaped by the investment we make In our children and youth today,” said church officials. ‘The laborer is worthy of his reward’
the fruit that troubles us and defiles
us.
- It is a burden that is unnecessary for us to bear. It is an enemy that eviscerates or destroys us from the inside out — bitterness. Have you forgiven every person who has hurt you or who hates you? Have you forgiven yourself for self-hate expressed in low self-es-teem of yourself and jealousy of others? . Choose to be better — catch it early — recognize the symptoms of bitterness: Unhappiness (we laugh, but we don’t smile), negafivity, jealousy, and evilness. ! (3) We become better by walking in the Word: ! • Lifting up the hands and heads which hang down. ^ ! • Making straight the paths of

your feet. • Following peace with all men. • Looking diligently — watching as well as praying. (4) We must trust the grace of God and not let bitterness take root. “Look after each other so that not one of you will fail to find God’s best blessings. Watch out that no bitterness takes root among you, for as it springs up it causes deep trouble, hurting many in their spiritual lives.” Hebrews 12:15 (LB) Remember, “you are the salt of the Earth and the light of the world” — you can make a difference — you really can! Second type of person just what the that we treat them with kindness Score was. While with the first type and love, and in most cases never of person they might say they are letting them know what we know with me, but I would have to won- about their talking about us, their der if they really were with me. trying to run us down. Now let me make three points It is said of Jesus Christ in the and I will close. First we must be midst of all that he had to endure very careful when we are talking lies, slander, and the like that “He about another person because what never said a murmuring word.” we are saying probably will get Yes it hurts when we hear of perback to them. Therefore if we are sons talking about us. But don’t reallysoconcemedaboutthemlefs retaliate; instead bless them and have the backbone to go to them pray for them, first and say what's on our mind. Let’s take care that it is not you Let me drop this into your spirit, or me talking about another trying those persons who we might be- to run them down and hurt them, li^eve will not Carry what we say Yes we are called to help but not to bpek to the person we are talking hurt. Finally let’s make sure that if a()out maybe can't wait to leave us we can say something about anand go tell what they have heard, other “behind their back” that we just a thought. surely can say it to their face first. Second, it really is important Ifwe cannot do this then it is better that we strive to only speak peace that we keep what we have to say to and about others. Even when we to ourselves, must bring a word of correction to Peace with justice and be sweet, someone let it be done in love and not in spite or evil. The Rev. Dr. Michael C. Carson * A helping word is not always a is senior minister at Historic word of “all is well.” No-all is not Wayman Chapel African Methodalways well, therefore it is impor- ist Episcopal Church in Kokomo, tant for you and me to hear that Ind. there is some work needing to be
done in our lives.
If we choose to take the low road and speak negatively about another not trying to help them but instead run them down, God will still take our words and use them to bless that person anyhow. “But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good.” (Gen-
esis 50:20)
Third, what do we do when we hear that someone has been talking negatively about us? Ah this is a very important question, first the Bible tells us “recompense to no man evil forevil” (Romans 12:17), “not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing.” (1 Peter 3:9) 1 know what our flesh wants to do upon hearing that someone has talked about us, slandered us even. We want to retaliate, we want to go tell them “about themselves.” But better that we pray for them, that we lift them up to God. “God have your will and way.” Better
