BRIEFS Continued from A1 sively. Individuals and organizations interested in supporting Standard Management’s Charitable Trust may call Standard Management Corporation at (317) 574-6225 or 1 -800-222-3216 for more information. New study credits state efforts with reducing teen drug, tobacco use Can the state’s efforts really have an impact in steering young people away from tobacco and other dmgs? Yes, Governor Frank O’ Bannon said, and a new study proves it. O’Bannon welcomed the findings of the Indiana Prevention Resource Center’s tenth annual survey, Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Use by Indiana Children and Adolescents. Its survey specifically credited Indiana’s after-school efforts, notably the Safe Haven program that O’Bannon launched in 1997. Those efforts provide anti-drug guidance, tutoring and other supervised, wholesome activities for students during the after-school hours when kids would otherwise be especially likely to experiment with tobacco and other dmgs, the report explained. New alliance offers new source of community support Under-funded charitable and

community organizations will soon gain strength and support from Standard Management Corporation. The Indianapolis-based company plans to provide donations to such organization through its Stan-., dard Management Corporation Charitable Trust, a donor-assisted fund administered by Central Indiana Community Foundation (CICF). The Company made donations to more than 60 Indiana organizations through its own charitable trust prior to partnering with the Foundation in July. Its new mission is to focus on funding smaller organizations that are not easily identifiable, by putting small contributions to work expansively. Individuals and organizations interested in supporting Standard Management’s Charitable Trust may call Standard Management Corporation at (317) 574-6225 or 1 -800-222-3216 for more information. Expert hails Indiana schools’ progress The Indiana Education Roundtable this afternoon endorsed new mathematics standards that are among the nation’s best. The action came as a national expert told the Roundtable that Indiana students’ math scores already have improved more than those in nearly all other states. After the State Board of Education votes next month to adopt the new standards, they will take effect on the ISTEP+ exam in the fall of2002 for grades 3,6 and 8 and in the fall of 2004 fdr 10th graders.

The board earlier this summer followed the Roundtable’s recommendation to adopt new academic standards in English. “It means that Indiana students and schools are doing well compared to students and schools in other states,” Grissmer explained. “It also means that this state’s reforms are paying off in terms of higher student achievement.” Foster parent training to begin soon If you have love to spare, but parenting small children is not for you, remember the many teens still waiting for foster parents. Most people do not realize that you do not have to be “at home” to be a foster. Working outside the home is often possible. Families with other children are also fine. Singles and empty nesters are welcome. Foster parents do not need to own their own home or have exceptionally large home or high income. An information meeting on foster parenting will be held Aug. 15, 6-8 p.m. at The Villages’ office, 652 North Girls School Rd., Suite 115. For more information call 317-273-7575 or 1-8000-874-6880.
