TOXIC Continued from A1

In order for communities to understand TRI sites, added Meadows, we must provide accurate medical information including possible health complications with asthma among children and elderly residents near TRI facilities. As a manufacturing city, acknowledged Meadows, Indianapolis toxic sites were initially established in the inner city. People may not have alternatives, however, to relocating away from neighborhoods where TRI facilities are heavily concentrated. The next phase of research will produce actual data highlighting specific TRI sites and residential areas. Chemical and air pollutants will be collected and examined to further research possible health risks. “The purpose of the project was to establish an environmental resource center for Indianapolis, and examine whether we have environmental issues in Indiana. We also looked at what people are exposed to in the air,” said John Mundell, IULEC project manager and president of Mundell & Asso-
ciates, who also recognized that specific airquality regulations may be enforced and created to decrease pollution. In an attempt to create awareness, IULEC plans to distribute research findings to residents, TRI representatives and local government officials this fall. After reviewing data, residents may choose > to carefully watch the amount of dust and other air pollutants in homes. While setting their own priorities, TRI sites may prefer to restrict and monitor the amount of toxic air released by their facilities without government intervention. “We’re hoping that many companies are aware of the communities around them and what they're contributing. This study provides a basis for a dialogue between (TRI) companies,” added Mundell. “Because a company is on the TRI list, does not make it a bad company. We want to connect communities' health and well-being with the businesses that operate in the area," he said.
