Continued from At children are motivated to achieve and to empower their people to become self-sufficient shareholders in the economic and social fabric of their communities. Over recent years, the lOOBlack Men, which was established in 1984, have implemented various mentoring, educational, health and wellness and economic development programs. Their current list of programs include a baseball V ague, scholastic basketball and t. ack and field, and a summer acad-

emy.

“I d m’t know how they do it,” said Corey Craig of the volunteer efforts of 134 professional Black men who donate their time and energy to run the free programs. Craig participated in the 100’s Beautillion Militaire, a developmental program for young men, and said he notices consistent improvements in the group. “Nothing is constant,” he said. “They are constantly growing. They’re not only attracting new members, but good members that are bringing excellent ideas to the group.” Pat Payne, director of IPS Office of Multicultural Education, said the group’s dedication to the city’s youth is invigorating and contagious. She is a co-chairper-son for the local 100’s AfricanAmerican History Challenge. Forest Manor students Jocelyn

Hood and Neil Stevenson,

sponsored by the chapter, won i National African-American Challenge competition’s Junior Division, which also was held at the conference. Junior and senior teapis also placed first and third respec-

tively. ,

“I find myself giving more tppd more time to the organization because they are about the business of young people,” said Payne. “J^s essential that organizations like the 100 Black Men, be a part of.tbe fabric of this city. They are available to our young people as mentors and coaches and they hgve initiated important programs like the African-American Hisfpry Challenge that are so beneficial to

the children of this city.”

Jerry Harkness, executive, director of 100 Black Men of Indianapolis, said the honor is a barometer, which proves the local chapter is headed in the right direction. “It shows that our work hasn’t been done in vain,” he said. “Put we have more youth to serve; youth who are struggling, youth that need role models and people who care.” Harkness said the organization plans on initiating programs to assist students with statewide testing, place a heavier emphasis on academics, increase links vyith schools and increase membership. “There are people begging.for our help,” he said, “but we just don’t have the volunteers.” J5pr more information on 100 Black Men on Indianapolis call 921 -1 ^68.

ers a paid day off. >1 In the 105th Congress, Hall “was one white guy off by his ofrn self’ trying to pass the bill, said Rev. Ronald Myers Sr., MID., chairman of the National Juneteenth Observance Founchtion. But this year, “there has teen significant support among theAf-rican-American community,", including perhaps as many as20,000 ori people whb are expected to attend the June \9. rally. . fu;iwnr In a letter to Myerk last'Week, Hall said, “My resolution’s primary purpose is to apologize for slaveiy. It acknowledges the apology is the necessary first step-in the larger process of racial reconciliation.” Hall said he also would endorse legislation offered by Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., to establish a commission to investigate “the legacy of slavery ” and to consider possible payment of reparations to descendants of slaves. Congressional staff members said this year they expected members of the Congressional Black Caucus to be active in pushing the resolution through Congress. The Juneteenth organizers have asked President Clinton to issue a proclamation creating a national Juneteenth holiday. A White House spokesman said Tuesday Clinton is likely to issue a letter acknowledging Juneteenth this year, though he does not appear likely to proclaim a permanent national holiday. 1 ■ The Juneteenth organizers have requested a meeting with Clinton and have asked Republican presidential candidate George W. Bush, the Texas governor, to support a national holiday. Texas is one of four states that have established a state Juneteenth holiday. Myers said Tuesday he is “very disappointed that I can’t get a response from the Bush camp to the question of whether he will support a national Juneteenth holiday.” .
