Golf tournament supports Recorder’s JAWS program
Recorder Staff Report Annually, individuals representing the local and national corporate community converge onto Indianapolis to rid themselves of the suits in exchange for polo shirts and shorts. Their briefcases are replaced with 5-irons; their palm pilots and cell phones give ways to tees and putters. Next week, those individuals will again test their skills and take to the fairways for a good cause. The sixth annual Mays Chemical Charity Golf Outing will again take place at the Coffin Golf Course, with proceeds going to The Indianapolis Recorder’s own JAWS, Journalism and Writing Seminars program. The program offers hands-on (raining to minority students aspiring to become journalists. According to Recorder Publisher and Mays Chemical CEO William G. Mays, the outing does not just provide an opportunity for the company to recognize its patrons for their partnership and outreach efforts, but also continues a thriving youth program. “The JAWS program is an excellent opportunity for young minorities toexplore journalism with hands-on experience,” he said. “Mays Chemical Company is proud to sponsor the charitable event.” “The JAWS program introduced me to a new form of study
that actually helps me at school,” said Krystle Dalton, 15, a sophomore at Arsenal Technical High School. She is a three-year participant in the program. “I’m depending on my educational skills in order to get me out of school and into success. The JAWS program is really a big help.” Added Recorder General ManagerCarolene Mays, proceeds from the event annually help The Recorder maintain a program that, for years, has helped African-Ameri-can students find direction and mentoring in the field of journalism. Communications specialist, Tysha Hardy-Sellers, provides 12 paid interns with skills that often reach beyond the realm of writing. "We hope that these prodigies will goon to study journalism, one day becoming journalist, but in actuality the skills they learn will help them in any field or area they may pursue," said Ms. Mays. While many of the golfers in the Mays tournament may not shoot under par individually, the scramble, best ball format allows teams of four to take the best drive, approach and putt of the group making birdies not only a possibility, but highly likely. And, with several teams vying for the top three low gross and low net scores, competition is fierce despite the true nature of the tournament. For more information on the JAWS program, contact the Recorder at 924-5143.
