Please don’t. The fourth choice is your attitude. .Chuck Swindoll says, “Attitude is everything.” CarterG. Woodson, the .father of African-American history, .declared, “If you can control a man’s thinking, then you can control his action.” I, The proverbial writer observed, ,“As he thinks in his heart, so is he.” .(Proverbs 23:7) That’s why it is important to get all the education you !>can. You should read, travel, and explore. Expand your mind! The fifth choice is giving. Giving is the secret to abundantly receiving. .'Motivator Zig Ziglar says, “Give enough people in this life what they need, and they will give you all you need.” Jesus waseven more succinct when he said, “The measure you give will be the measure you get.” (Matthew 7:2 RSV) Adopt giving as a lifestyle. You are blessed to be a blessing. I know it wasn’t easy to be a PK (preacher’s kid) but never discount the truth I preached to you and others. And never think because you were raised in the church, you don’t ^need the church. Soon I will be in jpheavert, and my prayer is that you ‘ don’t forget to live your life and express your faith in such a way that we will spend eternity together. You have given me so much joy and so much fulfillment as a dad. At the age of S, I was put on a train leaving St. Louis to live with my grandmother in Cleveland, because my parents were getting a divorce. I felt rejected and unprotected. I promised die Lord I would do better with my sons. I have been the husband of one wife, your mother, for

more than 30 years. We have loved each other through thick and thin with a lifelong commitment. Keeping your word is very important. It ’ s called integrity. Keep God first in your life. Love God with everything you have. Love your neighbor as you love yourself. Remember you are special, and you can make a difference in your lifetime. Keep a positive attitude. Give: It ’ s the key to life. Serve: It’s the key to peace. Pray: If sthe key to power. Love: It’sthe key to God. Take care of your parents when they are unable to care for themselves. Aim high in all you do, because Benjamin E. Mays, the educator, has said it well: “Low aim is sin!” You used to chuckle when I would say this, but it’s still true: “Bite off more than you can chew and chew it. Do more than you can do and do it. Hitch your wagon to a star. Take a seat and there you are!” Just as our heavenly Father loves his children. Daddy loves his sons. I really do, and all I ever wanted was the best foryou. Aim high!Love,Dad This letter from Bishop Benjamin to his three sons was one of the chapters in the book, From a Father’s Heart, by Dan Reiland, which was published in 1999 by Thomas Nelson Publishers. Remember, “You are the salt of the Earth and the light of the world.” You can make a difference — you really can! ’•. - Christ had this to say about the em*tt,bracing of salvation “Verily I say unto you. Whosoever shall not re- _ . ceive the kingdom of God as a little 41 child, he shall not enter therein.” (St. JJ Marie 10:15) We must simply accept ^ Jesus Christ — him crucified and him resurrected. This does not rule j j out study, the writing of books, discussing the gospel and the like, in . fact it is encouraged. But we should ■ study because we are saved, versus studying to get saved. ^ Tljere will always be a point and 4h a counterpoint to life, some new J J find, some old situation, but whatever, it must not hinder us ftom _ being saved by believing in the Lord ~J Jesus Christ as our personal savior. This is where the preaching of the gospel is so very important. I believe f that preaching convicts, we need to • be convicted. Teaching edifies it is important that once we are convicted by the Holy Spirit we learn more about our Christian walk. Bythewaywheredoesthepreach- ’ ing of the gospel usually take place? It takes place in the church, therefore we must be in church to receive the preaching of the Gospel. But in all of our learning let us read from the greatest textbook next to the Holy Bible, Jesus beckons us to “Leam of me.” (St. Matthew 11:28) By no means am I today trying to single handily put seminaries, Bible colleges, and Bible studies out of business, they are so very 1 important for you and me. But what I am saying is we must not become ' so obsessed with knowing about the master that we do not simply embrace the master. Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter “Fear God, and keep his commandments: for das is the whole duty of man.” (Ecclesiastes

12:13) Peace with justice and be sweet. Rev, Michael Carson is senior minister at Historic Wayman Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Kokomo, Ind.

an enemy of Christ (peace upon the Christ Jesus, the prophet) and as an enemy of democracy. The West had a emsader mentality. A lot of ugly things came to the public through hate-filled literature, newspaper cartoons (comics), and Hollywood movies. I think that time is mostly behind us. I think that now, die American people are better informed, less preju-’ diced, more opened minded, more inclined to embrace all cultures and respect all religions. Thank God for this time. This is die best time I believe we’ve had. When we say we’re Muslims and identify strongly as Muslims, but also preach racial hatred and stand upon an idea that distorts the image of Muslims. We ourselves are giving die public the wrong view of Muslims. My father was giving the wrong view of Muslims for about 40 years. We were told a scientist named Yacub experimented with the genes of the Black man and discovered how to graft from the Black man the white man. We were told it resulted in the graftingofarace of devils. That is what people in general would call a myth or fiction. I call it Fard' s metaphysics, and Fard’s mystical satire. We are not to get the meanings directly from the surface language. The meanings come only when we are able to unlock Fard’s invented terminology. He’s not talking about physical people. He’s talking in abstracts. I don’t excuse any intelligent edu-

cated African Americans who follow the wrong teachings of Islam. That is because the world has changed, die discriminating laws have been abolished, and race relations have improved. The average person is helped by educational television, so we can’t claim ignorance like we could in the time of segregation. However, America’s media (television, radio, newspapers) have definitely had and still have a role in the maligning of Islam and Muslim life. We know that the media has changed appreciably. Today the media is more accurate when reporting on Islam and Muslim life. There is so much evidence that 1 could give you to show that Muslims are not only accepting to coexist with Christians, Jews, Buddhist and others. We are not only accepting to coexist with Western democracy, weare scholars, religious leaders, students in Islam searching and doing research to see just how much opportunity may exist for Maslims, Christians and other religions to coexist and work together for the common good. We are also researching to identify compatibilities for Islamic democracy and American social order.
