BRIEFS
CofitlnMd from At American Indian Center of Indiana will 1 host a blood drive on June 3,11 a.m. - 2 r p.m. at 7128 North Zionsville Road. For more information visit: www.cirbc.ory. ‘ - »' ^ TamoxHsn found to b« 3 - equally effective j i A new analysis shows that tamoxifen is v as effective for black women as it is for Y white women in reducing the occurrence <; of “contralateral” breast cancer - cancer that develops in the healthy breast after ,» cancer in the opposite breast has been treated. In addition, the drug does not ,1 cause more side effects in Black women, n ■ as some had originally feared. 1. Black women at increased risk for breast t. cancer can also benefit from tamoxifen as \ a preventive drug. This finding may help *> ■ boos recruitment of black women into the *! Study of Tamoxifen and Raloxifene or
STAR, a breast cancer prevention study which is comparing those two drugs in women at high risk of the disease. After school programs awarded $20,000 The Stanley K. Lacy Executive Leadership (SKL) Class XXIV has awarded three grants totaling $20,000 to Christamore House, Jameson, Inc. and Robert Frost Elementary School #106. The selected programs within these organizations support this year’s SKL grant theme, “After School Today, Preparing for Tomorrow.” Recipients were awarded grants during a luncheon on May 11 at the Indianapolis Zoo. Diabetes and Hypertension A diagnosis of type 2 diabetes is often taken lightly. Many people with diabetes initially feel okay, don’t need insulin or medication, and are told that serious com-
plications are years down the road. But people with diabetes are twice as likely to develop high blood pressure—hypertension—as those without diabetes, and they are frequently hypertensive at the time they are diagnosed with the disease. If left uncontrolled, diabetes and hypertension is a dangerous combination. Diabetes alone is a major risk factor for stroke. That risk increases significantly when high blood pressure is added to the mix. And, people with diabetes are almost twice as likely to develop heart disease as people without diabetes. Statewide adoption fair scheduled for June 1 To learn more about the 300 Indiana children in need of loving adoptive homes, Indiana’s Adoption Initiative will host a statewide adoption fair on June 1, at the Children’s Museum, 30th and Illinois Streets. The fair, scheduled from S to 8 p.m. is free as well as admission to the
Children’s Museum that evening. Indiana’s Adoption Initiative is a statewide effort to find permanent homes for all children in Indiana. This public-pri-vate partnership is administered by the Children’s Bureau of Indianapolis and funded by a contract though the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration. For more information on the adoption process, contact the Initiative at 1-88825-ADOPTor visit www.state.in.fssa/ adoption. A call for volunteers Children’s Bureau of Indianapolis needs 100 volunteers to help distribute pamphlets and raise funds for Project Safe Place at Safe Place Saturday on June 24. The day will begin at 8:30 a.m. with a breakfast and instructions for all volunteers at the Children’s Bureau Family Support Center (located at 16th and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street). Volunteers will then man a Marsh Supermarket site from 10a.m. to 1 p.m. Teen and adult
volunteers are welcome. Volunteers will receive an event T-shirt. For more information or top sign up, call Camela Rosner at (317) 634-5050, Ext. 212. Summer food program The Christamore House Multi-Service Center announces the sponsorship of the Summer Food Service Program for children. Free meals will be made available to children 18 years of age and under, or persons more than 18 who are determined to by a state or local public education agency to be mentally or physically disabled and who participate in a public or nonprofit private school program established for the mentally or physically disabled. The meals will be provided without regard to race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability. The Christamore House located at 502 N. Tremont will provide breakfast and lunch from June 12-Aug. 11 Monday through Friday. Breakfast will be held from 8 to 9 a.m., and lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
