Disney’s ‘Dinosaur’ is a must-see blockbuster

THE SCOOP

Any elementary school student can tell you about dinosaurs, the great beast that dominated life on Earth millions of years ago. Any parent with a child over 3 is almost required to have at least one book about Brontosaurus and Pterodactyl. But, what have we here? Just when you thought that dino-life couldn’t get anymore realistic than “Jurassic Park,” Disney goes and does this. “What?”... you ’ re certainly asking yourself. Ten years in the making, requiring the blood, sweat and tears of hundreds of animators, Disney's “Dinosaur” is an adventure that places the lead character, a dinosaur by the name of Aladar, in some pretty weird situations, even for a dinosaur. Voiced by actor D.B. Sweeney. Aladar is raised from birth by a lemur named Piio, voiced by Alfre

Woodard, and her father Yar, voiced by Ossie Davis. “Aladar is my big, adorable lump of a son,” says Woodard. “When we open the film we hit the ground running. You feel as though you’ve journeyed back in time.” Alfre is referring to the tragic scene near the beginning of the film in which most of Pilo and Yar’s lemur relatives are killed during a meteor shower, forcing them to search for greener pastures. In the process, they run into a herd of iguanodons that are making their annual migration to the breeding grounds so that a new generation can be bom. Because of the chaos that the meteor shower has wreaked upon the world, the herd is filled with tag-a-long dinos of other species. One of which is a Cantankerous, yet wise old stytacosaur named Eema, voiced by Della Reese. ‘The character of Eema is opinionated and a lot of fun. She doesn ’ t

let things smolder in her. She has no fear of a particular dinosaur,” said Reese. When Eema falls ill from exhaustion Aladar comes to her aid, but he is quickly taken to task by the herd’s old school leader Kron, voiced by stage actor Samuel E. Wright (the brother who did the voice of Sabastian the crab in “The Little Mermaid”). “When we first started the film, Kron was a big nasty dinosaur, but he morphed into a misunderstood character and a tragic hero. He's not open to new suggestions, and therefore he is destined to fail miserably. He recognizes that Aladar is intelligent and can take his place. As a result, he worries he’s about to lose his position of authority.” There’s not much more we can tell y’all with out giving away the film. The computer animation is outstanding. Never before has someone been able to make fur (in Pilo and Yar’s case) look so real.

One often forgets they’re watching computer images and mathematical equations on the screen. It’s a must see. But, we must warn you that these are dinosaurs, and as fate would have it, dinosaurs get eaten by other dinosaurs. So we suggest you take your child’s tolerance for mild violence into consideration before seeing this one. Newsbits Women all over this country, and even the world, would go bananas if soul singer MAXWELL were to ask them out on a date. But when we ran into him at BET’s 20th Anniversary special, brother man was singing the blues over love lost. Here’s how he responded to DE DE IMcCLURE from the DOUG BANKS radio show. “I got my heart broke about 3 months ago. (Y’all) women are just hard on us brothers. Doing this as a career, and as a love makes it stressful on a relationship. When a

woman walks into a room she wants to be seen as number one. But when people are flashing cameras all in your face, it’s hard for a woman to feel special. It gets hard.” SEAN “PUFFY” COMBS has lost a bid to separate his trial on bribery and gun charges from the trials of two co-defendants. Combs’ lawyer, BENJAMIN BRAFMAN, said he asked for a separate trial because the judge plans to allow a jury to hear evidence that would be barred if Combs were tried alone. The evidence might be unfairly prejudicial, Brafman said. State Supreme Justice Charles Solomon, who will hear the trial of all three men, denied Brafman's motion, saying that he failed to establish good cause for granting a separate trial in the case. HBO has decided to give its prison thri I ler“Oz” another 16episodes. Here’s a list of guest stars who will be featured on the show.

next season; GAVIN MacLEOD, PEPA of Salt-N-Pepa, EDWARD HERMANN, DANA IVEY, DAVID JOHANSEN, CARLOS LEON, JOHN McMARTIN and KATHLEEN WIDDOES. REG E. CATHEY of HBO’s “The Corner” is slated to be the new warden of the Emerald City jail compound, and series newcomer LANCE REDDICK will play an undercover cop set on busting the prison’s drug ring. After weeks of rumors floating around the Internet and elsewhere, LA Laker KOBE BRYANT has admitted he is indeed set to jump the broom. Only problem is (for all of us at least) he won’t say who his bride-to-be is. But he did say she’s not in showbiz. Well in that case, we can scratch BRANDY off the list.
