Tommy Boy Gospel is continually cranking out the music. Formed by the 20-year-old top independent mainstream hip-hop and dance music label Tommy Boy Music Inc., 2-year-old Tommy Boy Gospel already boasts an impressive roster including Kim Burrell, Sara Von Davenport, Spiritual Pieces, Deleon Richards Desmond Pringle, 4th Elemynt, the GMWA Men’s Chorus and New Divine Destiny. Its affiliated label, MSS Records’ roster includes T-Boy & 5.0,3N1, and Ataq. The label recently released New Divine Destiny’s debut album. The choir was formed by Alphonza Kee, brother of John P. Kee. Alphonza is the musical torfortheNewLifeFellowshipFamily Church (Charlotte, N.C.), which his brotherpastors. Nicknamed “The Church Choir,” New Divine Destiny consists of New Life Fellowship members ages 16 to 50. The debut project from the choir, “Be Ready,” also features some of gospel’s best vocalists, including Tonex, Shelia Lakin (of Kee’s New Life Community Choir), Chris

Simpson, Buddy Banks (formerly of the Rude Boys), and Pastor John P. Kee. “After hearing this choir, I knew that we had to have them," reflects gospel label head Max Siegel. “I thought that I had heard the best of the Kee clan, but this project proves me wrong!” In other news, last month. Tommy Boy Gospel released 4th Elemynt debut album, "Elemyntal,” which is a collection of hip sounding gospel. Members of 4th Elemynt are proteges of gospel artists Tonex. “4th Elemynt is poised to take contemporary gospel into the new millennium,” says Marvie Wright, general manager/head of marketing at Tommy Boy Music’s gospel division, “The group’s debut recording, ‘Elemyntal,’ is a joint release from Tonex’s label MSS and Tommy Boy Gospel. It features songs written and produced by Tonex. Setting the record straight Recently, word was spread that
singer Candi Staton was leaving gospel to sing the blues. As a result, Staton, who hosts Trinity Broadcasting Network’s “Say Yes,” was dropped from a few radio stations and concert dates that she had lined up at churches were canceled. But Candi says, the news isn’t true. She isn’t leaving gospel. Fact is, much of the controversy comes from the album, “Outside In,” an inspirational project of dance music that she recorded for React Records in Lon-
don.
“There is not one song on that album that cannot be sung in church,” she said. “It’s an uplifting albtim. The kind of gospel the Winans and Mary, Mary do.” Staton will be'releasing a new gospel project “Heite’ s a Blessing for You: Love, Frbm Candi Staton” in late summer on Beracah Records.
