Embry to receive Ohio high school athletic award Wayne Embry, president and chief operating officer, of the Cleveland Cavaliers, has been selected as the 2000 winner of the Ohio High School Athletics Association’s Ethics and Integrity Award, and will receive it at the OHSAA Scholar-Athlete Scholarship Banquet June 9 in Columbus. Embry was elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1999, and was named the Sporting News NBA Executive of the Year in 1991-92 and 1997-98. He moved into his current position after serving as the Cavaliers’ vice president and general manager for 13 years. Embry, a native of Springfield, Ohio, played 11 years in the NBA with the Cincinnati Royals, Boston Celtics and Milwaukee Bucks, and was a five-time NBA All-Star. He became the Bucks’ general manager in 1972 and remained with the team for 12 years. He then spent a year in the front office of the Indiana Pacers before joining the Cavaliers in 1986. Thomas honored by National Conference of Black Mayors Isiah Thomas, former Detroit Pistons star and chairman and CEO of the CBA, was presented with the President’s Award by the National Conference of Black Mayors Inc. at the organization’s annual convention, held in April in Dallas. Thomas was acknowledged for his contributions to the community and setting a positive example as a young Black entrepreneur. Thomas, a finalist for induction to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, played 13 seasons with the Pistons. A 12-time All-Star, he was MVP of the 1984 and 1986 All-Star Games. ppg, 34th best in NBA history) and assist-holder (9,061), he was named one of the SO Greatest Players in NBA history in 1996 and led the Pistons to NBA titles in 1989 and 1990. The National Conference of Black Mayors Inc. is a nonprofit, nonpartisan, service organization which provides management and technical assistance to Black mayors and articulates the membership’s concerns on national policy issues. Anniversaries Mayl5,1995: FormerNBA stars Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Vem Mikkelsen, former NBA coach John Kundla and former NBA referee Earl Strom were among seven individuals inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. May 15,1990: FormerNBA stars Dave Bing, Elvin Hayes, Neil Johnston and Earl “The Pearl” Monroe were inducted into the Hall of Fame. May 17,1995: Jason Kidd of Dallas and Grant Hill of Detroit were named co-winners of the NBA Rookie of the Year Award, marking the first time since 1971 — when Boston’s Dave Cowens and Portland’s Geoff Petrie were named co-winners — that two players shared the award. May 18,1975: Rick Barry hit a jumper with 38 seconds remaining to put Game 1 of the NBA Finals out of reach as Golden State defeated Washington 101-95. Barry, the series MVP, continued with dominating performances as the Warriors swept the Bullets in four straight to take the title. May20,1995: Houston’s Mario Elie sank a three-pointer from the comer with 7.1 seconds . to play, lifting the visiting Rockets ft) a 115-114 triumph over Phoenix in Game 7 of their Western Conference Semifinal series at America West Arena. 3-1 deficit in a best-of-seven playoff series, and Houston’s victory also broke a string of 20 consecutive wins by the home team in Game 7 of a playoff series. Just 24 hours later, Indiana repeated that feat by the road team after downing host New York 97-95 in Game 7 of their Eastern Conference Semifinal series. May21,1995: GoldenState, with just a 9.4 percent chance of succeeding, moved past four teams and won the 11th annual NBA Draft Lottery, giving the Warriors the right to select first overall in the 1995 NBA Draft. Golden State used the pick to select Maryland forward Joe Smith. By the numbers 190 — Career playoff appearances by Portland’s Scottie Pippen, good for third place in the NBA career list, tied with Magic Johnson. 51 — Free throws attempted by the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday in their 105-99 victory over Phoenix in Game 3 of their Western Conference Semifinal series. 31.4 —Playoff scoring average of the Los Angeles Lakers’ Shaquille O’Neal, tops in the NBA. . ' 25 — Playoff scoring average of Indiana’s Reggie Miller, who averaged 18.2 points during in the regular season. 22 — Points scored by Phoenix’s Jason Kidd, to go with 10 rebounds and 16 assists, in the Suns’ 117-98 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday. 19 — Points scored by Portland’s Bonzi Wells in 15 minutes during the Trail Blazers’ 103-84 triumph over Utah in Game 3 of their Western Conference Semifinal series. 2.2 —Seconds left when Miami’s Anthony Carter converted from the baseline to give the Heat a 77-76 overtime victory over New York in Game 3 of their Eastern Conference Semifinal series.
