We must teach money management
Why is it that so many of our families seem to always have financial problems? Are you one of the many African-American families living from paycheck to paycheck? If you did not to receive a paycheck for 30 days, which in most cases is two paychecks, would you be able to survive the bill collectors? Honestly, most financial advisors, say that you should be able to pay all of your bills for six months without relying on an income from your employer. You are probably saying, “yeah rightT’After 12 years of formal education in publicschools, and in some cases, four years of college, why are we still struggling to pay off bills and get ahead? Have you heard your fami ly and friends say, “Once I get my bills paid off, then I will be able to save some money.” And of course, they never get their bills paid off. Does school really prepare our children

for the “real world" and the real life financial situations that we face in our daily lives? We were all taught to study real hard in school, get good grades, go to college, and get a degree. Following this advice would set us up for a good career paying job. Doesn’t it seem that the more money you make, the more you spend? You know the more you make, the more IRS will take. The bigger your house, the more expensive your car, the more money you will have to borrow and the more money you will have to spend on taxes, maintenance and upkeep. You also know that the more money you make, the more you will go into debt. As the children get older, the more there is a need to save for college, and plan for your retirement. Parents go back to school to get more training, so they can get a higher salary. They work more overtime for the extra money and some even get part-time jobs. They work even harder on the job and become more dedicated employees. Now you are making all of this money and do not seem to know where all of it is going. In today’s society of rapidly changing technology and new inventions, the job market is forever changing. There is not as much job security as there was 20 years ago. Companies are downsizing and laying people off, and the skills .that were needed 20 years ago just aren ’ t enough to keep up in today’s society. Social Security and pension funds will not be enough to sustain our “inflated” way of living. How, could a country, with millions of educated college graduates, have so many people a paycheck away from eviction and two paychecks away from bankruptcy? Because our public school system does not teach us how to be financially rich. The system teaches us to be very good employees and it stresses the development of important skills that can help us be a more marketable worker for someone else. The “real rich” people in our country do not get to this financial plateau in life by applying the skills that they learned in school. Could it be possible that our children are spending year after year in an educational system, studying subject matter that they will never use, and preparing to use what they learned in a world that does not exist in the sense that they learned it? Isn’t it ridiculous that 1 percent of the population owns over 90 percent of the wealth in our country? Sure some of these individuals have college degrees, but only as a formality. The majority of these individuals became wealthy because of what they were taught about money, accounting and investing. At what point will you teach your children what the rich people teach their children? How long do you want to continue “just making ends meet?” The education that your children are receiving today is not much different than what you received when you went to school. ‘ There is the additional excitement and interest in computers, but do not think for a minute that your child is being trained to be the next Bill Gates (Microsoft) or Steven Jobs (Apple). Your child is simply doing the same work that they did on paper, now on the computer. The principals remain the same. Become marketable and prepare yourself to find a good secure job. The schools should not take all the blame forourcountry’s money mismanagement problems, the parents do bare some of the responsibility. What you can teach your child at home, that will hever be taught in the public classroom, to help them have a better financial future than your current one, will be discussed next week. Remember, it does not matter where you are, what matters is where you are headed. Send your comments or questions to: leroyrobinson <& msdlt k!2. in.
