Mmntal health author to speak Controversies surrounding the "U.S. Surgeon General’s Report on Mental Health” will be' addressed by one of its authors during the third annual Mental Health Symposium “Putting Research into Practice” from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., June I, at Union Station. The symposium, which isopen to mental health professionals, policymakers, consumers and theirfamily members, and people in recovery for alcohol and chemical abuse, is presented by the Indiana University Department of Psychiatry in conjunction with the annual meeting of the Mental Health Association in Indiana Inc. The surgeon general’s call to action for communities, health and social service agencies, policymakers, employers and citizens will be addressed by keynote speaker U.S. Navy Rear Adm. Thomas H. Bomemann, Ed.D., assistant surgeon general with the U.S. Public Health Service. The report challenges the nation to be more proactive with research and treatment and to grant parity for mental health coverage with other illnesses and diseases. Sports theme for Indiana’s quarter A basketball player and a race car superimposed over the state’s outline: That’s the design Gov. Frank O’Bannon has recommended for Indiana’s commemorative quarter. The design, created by 17-year-old Josh Harvey of Centerville, was alsothe firptpick among the more than 136,000 ballots cast either on-line or by mail for the 17 semifinalists in a statewide competition. The U.S. Mint is issuing new quarters to commemorate each of the states in the order they became states. O’Bannon is forwarding Harvey’s design to the Mint.

NCNW to host annual brunch National Council of Negro Women, Indianapolis Section, will host its annual Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune June Recognition Brunch. The event will be held on June 3 at the Omega Conference Center, 3110 Sutherland Ave. The program will begin at 10:43 a.m. A’Lelia Bundles will be guest speaker. Marvin Scott wins nomination The Marion County Election Board recently reported official results showing Marvin Scott defeated Tony Samuel by more than 3,000 votes and captured the republican 10th District Congressional Nomination. Scott received 11,041 (58 % of the vote) compared to Samuel's 7, 877 votes (42% of the vote).
