MOTHERS
Continued from A1
On any given day you'd find mama satisfying our sweet taste buds. I especially remember cold wintry days, after the snow had fallen several feet. She would ask us to go outside, scrape off the top of the snow, put some fresh fallen snow into a bowl, and she would make snow ice cream. Occasionally on some summery hot days, she made up a custard. Everyone took turns churning the handle on the ice cream maker. It turned the creamy custard mixture into frozen ice cream. I spent a lot of time around the long kitchen table, watching mama preparing foods. As a result, I learned to cook well at an early age. Mama was an excellent cook, who rarely used a cookbook or recipes. She also loved to crochet and made beautifully hand -sewn quilts. Although it seemed challenging to me, it was relaxation for her. She would sit on the couch in the living room while chewing gum, and create some very unique patterns. I was amazed because she was so talented. Mama was a zealot when it came to the appearance of our house. She made sure that everything was neatly done and kept in order. Indeed, she was a very independent woman. She taught us honesty, self respect, and the value of a dollar. Mama was a strict, Christian mother who knew the Lord. Every Sunday we attended Sunday school and church. She made sure that Christ was a part of our lives, by keeping us active in church. Many great traits were learned from her. Of course we also knew that side of
her that you didn't want to upset. Whenever mama was antagoni zed, you’d dare not cross her path. Mama loved life; she also loved her children. She was unable to bear her own children, so she dedicated her life to rearing foster children. She reared 23 foster children. We are copiously blessed, to have had her be a part of our lives. These- are only a few precious memories I am able to recall as I stand here to pay my respects, and say goodbye to mama. She has now taken her well deserved rest. She no longer has to endure the pain and suffering of the Alzheimer's disease that took control of her body years ago. This disease also deprived her of the life that she once loved to live. Many changes took place in her life, and ours after she was stricken with this devastating disease. It was excruciating, and at times unbearable to watch a woman of her stature gradually deteriorate physically and mentally. As the disease progressed, it onset other health complications. We no longer were able to provide adequate care for her at home. Mama now had to be institutionalized. This was a challenge indeed! It took several placements until at .last, we found a nursing facility with a unit that specialized with Alzheimer's patients. The last years of mama's life were spent in a nursing facility. We all knew that this was something she always dreaded. In her earlier years, she often spoke of never wanting to be put in a controlled environment. She was a proud woman who loved her freedom. Her eyes revealed her sadness and her frail body told the story of
her tiredness and struggle . No longer did she desire to live in a vegetated state. I consistently prayed for God to release her from the anguish. After years of battling with this disease. The day came when her battle would be no more. At last, she was liberated from alj of her misery and suffering. On Feb. IS, 1989, at 12:01 a.m. t I received notification from the nursing facility that mama had passed. I thought that I had prepared myself, I had anticipated it would be soon. However, I was overwhelmed with emotions of sadness and distress. I had to face the realization that in only a few days, I was never going to see mama again. Her life had ended; I knew how much I was going to miss being able to see her face It was my responsibility, to inform my father and other immediate family members of our immense loss. I now had to rely on my faith to give me the courage, as I made the calls one at a time. I remember that night as if it were yesterday. The drive to the nursing facility was exceptionally long and grievous. As the tears flowed, I felt God's love encircling, comforting, and empowering ro» for the tasICoT the days ahead. Mama now rests in the bosom of God. I am very grateful to have had her as a role model. She definitely has made an impression on my life, as well as the lives of others that knew her. I now understand her ethics and principles. I can appreciate the discipline she taught me. So where did mama go? She went home! Her spirit shall remain in our hearts, lives, and in generations to come forever. Finally, her spirit has been set free.
