According to Williams, 1BE received $60,000 last year from the city, while the Indy Jazz Festival enjoyed $1.5 million to help put on its event.' Gail Barnes, IBE comptroller, had this to say: “We’re maintaining, making a small profit, but we want to do more for the community. That’s why we need more corporate sponsors and grants. If we get this, we can do bigger and better thin-: , fn improve our yearround programs.” IBE sponsors many youth enhancement and educational programs, which include “Cool ‘N Smart Computers & Tutors,” Youth Video Institute, National AAU Championship Tournament, Youth Corps and Youth Summit, just to name a few. It also sponsors the “We Can Feed the Hungry” program which fed nearly 2,400 Indianapolis residents during Christmas 1999. This year’s annual summer festivities will celebrate 30 years of service to the community and beyond. Held at the Indiana Convention Center, RCA Dome and surrounding downtown areas. Black Expo is visited by thousands of people from all around the globe. The exposition includes, but is definitely not limited to an Employment Opportunity Fair, a

And this year will mark the 17th annual Circle City Classic, a much awaited football game played by two B lack col lege teams In addition to the game, it features a large parade through the Downtown area, the coronation of a Circle City Classic queen, a Black college fair as well as many other activities. Williams and Barnes said they wanted to make it clear that although these are IBE’s big money events, the organization still strugglesfinancially when itcomes to maintaining its other programs. “Although it is a struggle, the driving force is what Expo does for the people,” Rev. Williams explained. “We recognize the achievements of African Americans, because this is a time to celebrate them. And it is so gratifying because this event belongs

to us.”

Other similar expos charge admissions of $10 to $15, Williams said. But admission for IBE is no more than $6. “We’ve kept admission at a minimal amount to allow everyone a chance to participate,” he continued. “People just don’t understand that whatever they go to see (the concerts, sporting events, etc.) really costs us. And when we charge only $5 or $6, it doesn’t pay the cost we have to bear. Even though we get a cost break from the Convention Center, the cost is still astronomical.” Rev. Williams said, “But my spirit has always been one of service, always wanting to help people. When we started Indiana Black Expo, we had little resources, but the hard work and dedication of our volunteers made it work.” Indiana Black Expo not only impacts on the city economically, but in other ways as well. “I think the expo is a very successful opportunity for the Black community to come together,” said 20-year-old Camille Thompson. “It allows Blacks to take advantage of acquiring jobs, free health screenings and youth-oriented workshops.” Sommer Rhim said: “The expo is positive networking with people of all colors, globally. Although it isaBlack event, other races join in the celebration. And it has helped me to realize my full potential in several areas.” Annually, IBE recognizes Indiana college student through its scholarship program. Up to $50,000 is awarded each year, whether IBE is financially capable or not, according to Barnes. “We see to that, because this is what we’ve always done,” she said. One of the greatest attractions for this year’s Black Expo will be the “UniverSoul Circus,” an all Black circus, to be held at the Indiana State Fairgrounds on July 12 through 16. Negotiations are also under way to bring to the celebration the popular group Earth, Wind & Fire, which is also celebrating 30 years together, Williams said. When asked just what IBE means to him, Williams replied: “Thirty years of people taking a dream, a vision and making it a reality. It’s an understanding of the need for people to be in touch with their history and culture. And as I look back on all the hard work of volunteers, staff and board members dedicated to achieving that vision, it makes it all worthwhile. But most importantly are the contributions that African Americans have made to this city and state, both culturally and economically." Williams and Barnes urged more sponsorships, grants, city funding, and any other monies to keep alive the dream of Indiana Black Expo for another 30 years
