Midnight Star on verge of rising above horizon

THE SCOOP

With all the things that have been going on in the media as of late, and in your everyday life, the EUR has taken it upon itself to sloooooow things down for you, ; our readers. We’re keeping things 1 on the low key for this one. As a [ matter of fact we’re taking it so r slow that we’re now traveling back

I in time to 1980.

That’s around the time when T Midnight Star first began making • noise. The singles “Freak-A-Zoid,” , “No Parking on the Dance Roor,” ' “Wet My WhisUe”... wait, you re- \ member all their hot joints from l the roller rink, prom, family rej union, bar mitzvah ... whereever. People, like us, have always wondered what the group had been up to, now we’re about to find out. “We’ve been a little bit of everywhere,” group member Belinda

Lipscomb told us. “We’ve gotten back together after a seven-year hiatus and a lot of people were doing different projects.” The group broke up in the early ‘90s because, well they were tired. But now a rejuvenated Midnight Star is on the verge of rising above the horizon. “We started touring again last year. Basically everybody wanted to do some other things as far as projects were concerned,” Lipscomb said. “Bo Watson was doing some things for Babyface and Toni Braxton. Mel Gentry was doing some personal things and working with Toni Braxton as well and I was doing some acting. “We were staying busy and keeping our ears to the streets to make sure that we come back with something that everybody’s been looking for,” said Lipscomb. Now is as good a time as any for Midnight Star to come back on the

scene. The people that went to those proms and discos in the 1980s? Well, they have children now. So, in some instances, that means they can’t go shake it like they used to, but Midnight Star could change all that. Especially if they’re in concert. Synthesizer player Bo Watson said, “Well, basically Melvin called me and asked if I’d been checking out the radio and watching TV because there was a resurgence of old school coming back.” Watson said, “Sinbad (bless his soul) was bringing back some of the groups like the Gap Band and others from back in the day. So we noticed that there was a wave happening. So, we decided to jump on the wave and get back the group.” Newsbits On May 23 LUCY PEARL’S long awaited setnMe^set will finally be awaiting yourhuitgTy ears

at the record stores. Everybody’s real curious in regard to how it will sound, but if you want to get a taste a little bit early then pick up the soundtrack to SPIKE LEE’S “Love and Basketball,” the group’s single is titled “I Wanna Dance.” RAPHAEL SAADIQ, DAWN ROBINSON and ALI SHAHEED MUHAMMAD were recently in LA shooting the song’s video, directed by DARREN GRANT. “Love and Basketball” opens nationwide on April 21. * * * Public Enemy’s CHUCK D is making things happen in the month of April. He’ll be in Madison, Wis., for the Hip-Hop Generation Conference where he will be speaking on wicked radio. For more info send e-mail to: [email protected] The conference is free for those who wish to attend.

* * * You can forget “Forgive or Forget.” It’s outta here. After two seasons and two hosts, Twentieth Television has pulled the plug. After MOTHER LOVE was given the boot, ROBIN GIVENS was brought in to inject life into the show. While she did spark viewership in certain demographics, execs said it was too little too late. * * * Hollywood’s best and brightest Black filmmakers, directors, executives and actors will have the opportunity to be in Acapulco from June 3 - 10 at the Black Film Awards. That’s when they will celebrate the achievements of three peers whose contributions to the film industry warrant international acclaim. Each year, festival producers BYRON LEWIS, JEFF FRIDAY, and WARRINGTON

HUDLIN, select the brightest among Black stars and the most promising Black film making talent to receive the recognition often denied them by Hollywood. The festival is presented by HBO. * * * WESLEY SNIPES is set to star in, and produce, the upcoming HBO film “Disappearing Acts,” a love story based on a novel by author TERRY McMILLAN. The movie, to be filmed in New York, revolves around a Brooklyn construction worker who falls in love with a music teacher who’s trying to get into the entertainment business, and is played by SANAA LATHAN of “The Best Man” and the upcoming film “Love and Basketball.” The Scoop is provided by Electronic Urban Report.
