I Iw Best Dirt Is Our People

Recorder Editor Anarl V. Holmes continues coverage of the Indianapolis Public Schools Board race with candidate profiles. These profiles are intended to help voters learn more about potential IPS de-

about our children and I care about the IPS school system. These are critical times for IPS and it will need the experience, consistency, continuity, background and knowledge I provide.

eision makers and their respective I bring a dimension of balance campaign platforms. between new and veteran board

members. IPS is making great strides and moving in the right direction. I want to be a part of sustaining that forward momen-

tum.

This week, we feature District 2 candidates. District 4 and the remaining At-Large candidates will be profiled in upcoming issues.

Candidates were asked the following four questions: 1. Why are you running? 2. How would you make IPS better? 3. What is the most pressing issue facing IPS? 4. How would you address that pressing issue? Special Notes These profiles are arbitrarily placed. Your feedback concerning these candidates may be forwarded to A. Holmes at: P.O. Box 18499, Indianapolis, IN 46218-0499; email: [email protected] and fax (317) 924-5148 * * * The IPS School Board election is May 2. Those selected that day will become members of the board. There will not be any IPS School Board candidates on the ballot in the fall election.

1. Asa career educator and a product of the IPS school district, I care greatly

2. Assuming the availability of funds, I would want to implement more preschool and fullday kindergarten programs. The early years are crucial for establishing a firm foundation for learning. Research shows that the earlier the brain is stimulated, the greater the influence upon learning. Early childhood programs increase a child’s academic readiness and help close the learning gap for students who may be at risk of failure. 3. Improved academic performance of students is only one of many challenges facing IPS. 4. Parental involvement within the school system and within the lives of their children is key to improving a student’s academic performance. Accountability on the part of all is paramount for student success. IPS must continue to address students’ diverse learning styles, needs, interests and talents through magnet/option programs, alternative schools and programs, vocational education and school-to-work transitional programs.
