The action in ‘Romeo Must Die’ is unparalleled

THE SCOOP

By now you’ve heard of, or read about, the new action film “Romeo Must Oie.” It’s filled with action, lots of decent acting, and then there’s Aaliyah. The pop star’s acting skills are surprising to say the least. She plays the part of a young woman whose dislike for her father’s criminal lifestyle is heightened by the death of her older brother. The role of her father, Isaac O’ Day, is played by Delroy Lindo, a great character actor whose time in the spotlight is long over due. At first glance, one may be fooled into thinking this film has stereotypical casting written all over it, but the film’s plot-line prevents that from happening to a certain degree. “I guess it’s ironic that as the story is resolved, as the movie con-

cludes, we find that the dirt has been done more by the Asian family,” Aaliyah said. “And, in fact, Isaac thought he was doing one thing, and he finds out that all along it was his right hand man, Mac, that was doing all this behind the scenes stuff. “That’s ironic considering what people think about Chinese people and their honor, but what it comes down to is who are these people? What I tried to do was just present a person who was struggling with some emotional issues and that would be compelling for the audience to see.” The role of Isaac O’ Day’sright hand man, Mac, is played by Isiah Washington. His character, initially, seems like a loyal and loving friend to Lindo's character, but that soon changes when he realizes that his much loved criminal life may soon come to an end. “I just see my character as a business man with efficiency and

purpose and loyalty, which was then bought by Cho (the leader of the Chinese crime family),” Washington said. “My character’s name was Mac, but I took the liberty to add a line in there: Machiavellian Incorporated. I read the book Prince again and I read several other different books on family and betrayal,” Washington said. The film’s cast is predomantly a minority one. In this day and age of all-boys circles and racial exclusions, Isiah’s philosophy on Hollywood is one based in realism whether we like it or not. “Warren Beatty has problems raising money for films. Clint Eastwood does too, but because of his icon status they eventually say yes. But there are still forces that are very, very concerned about the risk of their investment,” said Washington. “That’s what it’s all about. It’s all business. So, I say ‘How can we

fit into that and maintain our integrity?’ It’s not fair for us to say that we have to represent the AsianAmerican community or the Afri-can-American community. Not to say we’re not cognizant of that, but you have to be in the game to play the game. Not saying we’re going to win right away, but eventually it will happen.” “Romeo Must Die” is in theaters nationwide. Its action scenes are unparalleled and the acting is cool. If you want to see a film that shows Blacks and Asians at their moral zenith then you need to stay home. If you want action and drama then “Romeo Must Die” is the film to see. Newsbits • Hmm, if we told you that a Black man was responsible for the choreography of a country music act what would you say? Well, you'd better think quick because Anthony Thomas, responsible for

the moves on Janet Jackson’s “Rhythm Nation Tour,” is responsible for the fancy foot work of the Judds on their current tour. In fact, he’s said to be the first brother to do this type of work for a country music act. • All-boy group N’Sync is setting records as easily as you set your alarm clock. Their album “No Strings Attached” was dropped on a Tuesday and first-day and first week album sales are set to break records. Billboard Online said Jive Records shipped 4.2 million copies of the set and that reorders were rushing in from retailers just hours after the photogenic quintet’s album went on sale. The SoundScan-era record for debut-week sales belongs to rival pinup popsters The Backstreet Boys, who thrust 1.13 million copies of “Millennium” upon the masses last May. • If you never got a chance to see “The Bone Collector” when it

was out last fall, then video is the only place you’ll get to see it— for now. The movie was the No. 1 renting VHS and DVD title for the week ending March 19. • The First International Black Panther Film Festival is the brainchild of former Black Panthers Kathleen Cleaver and Jamal Joseph with Voza Rivers, executive producer of New Heritage Theatre Group and its New Heritage Films division. The festival will feature films that contain powerful images and subject matters pertaining to the legendary, almost mythical sounding heroics and actions of The Black Panther Party For Self-Defense. It all goes down on April 7 and 8 at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, located at SIS Malcolm X Boulevard in Harlem, NY. The Scoop is provided by Electronic Urban Report.
