moved into evening; then middays. Forashoit time, in the early 1990s, feuchanon became the First woman •» in Indianapolis radio history, to anchor the crucial morning drivetime slot at a major station. < In the mid-1980s, she became Ithe station’s music director, the first female to hold such a position for a Ihajor Indianapolis radio station. As music director, Buchanon was Responsible for much of the music ‘played by WTLC-FM during its glory years of the 1980s and early |1990s. 3 ' After the departure of "Simper ^ay” Johnson in June 1993, ‘Buchanon became first acting program director and then held the job permanently. In doing so, she became the first, and one of just two Women to serve as program director of a major Indianapolis radio Station. At the time, Buchanon was one of the few women programding a Black formatted station in lie country. Reaction to Buchanon’s ouster )as been swift and varied. Phone Halls and e-mails of protest poured i to WTLC’s offices and the corarate office of Emmis Communiiations. One e-mail said, "Vycki ^as been a mainstay at WTLC for Hver 20 years. She was fired from ! for no apparent reason other lian for change.” The e-mail asked tiat listeners “contact the general lager at WTLC” and request sy rehire her. City-County Councilman .onnell “King Ro” Conley knows vhat Buchanon is experiencing, cause he was dismissed for the vague reasons by the same „ officials in October 1998. % “Vycki’s firing was totally out of line,” said Conley. “After 20 some years they should have given <=her a send off. They should have ■publicly acknowledged her contributions to the station and the comIfnunity.” B' When Conley left WTLC £he was allowed to say goodbye to listeners and the community. He’s epuuzled and upset that the same Ifesped wasn’t accorded BfuChanoh:' Indianapolis NAACP President Roderick Bohannon was also upset at Buchanon’s firing. “It’s unfortunate that an institution like Vycki Buchanon, a person that is the best of our community, an icon, is treated in this manner,” said Bohannon. Both Councilman Conley and NAACP President Bohannon say Buchanon’s dismissal signalsadisturbing attitude of contempt towards the African-American community. “Maybe it’s time the community has a conference with Jeff Smulyan (Emmis’ president and chief executive officer) to see where they are coming from vis a vis our African-American community,” said Conley. Bohannon echoed Conley’s sentiments, “Ourcommunity needs to know where Emmis and WTLC stands. Is WTLC going to be allowed to be a viable part of our Black community? Will it continue to play its historic role of providing information and motivation and taking on social causes and speaking up on behalf of the rights of African Americans and other minorities?” Bohannon asked. Councilman Conley added, “Emmis as a leader in this community, and coming so soon after the Mayor’s Race Relations Summit, should step up to the plate as a leader and deal with the problems of hiring, promotion and retention of African Americans at Emmis.”

However, jury selectionresulted in four white men, two white women and four African-Ameri-can women, one of whom was seated as the foreman. The four alternate jurors are all white males. Several of the jurors in Albany have strong connections to the Bronx — where officers Kenneth Boss, Sean Carroll, Edward

McMellon and Richard Murphy are accused of murder and reckless endangerment of Diallo. The officers, who have pleaded not guilty, have said through their attorneys that they believed the unarmed Diallo had a gun. If convicted of murder, they face a maximum prison term of 25 years to life. Jury selection before state Supreme Court Justice Joseph C. Teresi moved at an extremely rapid pace.
