By JAMES CLINGMAN (NNPA) — Well, another boycotting, letter-writing, faxing, protesting, rationalizing, explaining, apologizing episode in our lives has mercifully come to an end. I heard brothers and sisters calling in on the radio shouting things like, “We won” and “We brought them to their knees!” along with asking Tom Joyner to play, “I’m Black and I’m Proud.” I could hardly resist the temptation to call in and request him to play another James Brown song that says, “Let’s get together and get some land.” The computer wars are over and many of us are celebrating. Many of us are sending in our receipts for our discounts. Even more of us are saying it’s safe to gobackintothewaternow. After all, the shark has been killed. The enemy has waved the white flag. We are the victors and we get the spoils. Let the Christmas shopping begin! While I will not mention the name of the company (I will not give them anymore free publicity) because I am sure you know the incident to which I am referring. As I followed the chain of events I kept asking myself, “How easily will this one get off?” and, “What will Black people gain from this latest furor?” The results are in, and now we can go home, sit and wait for the next crisis. The infamous company can go back to business as usual and make even more money than it did before this event. We get our ten percent discounts, and they get more business. And, all they had to say was “I’m sorry.” Sure, they will give some money to a Black owned ad agency and probably create some slick advertisements for television, like Denny’s and Texaco have done. That’s a small price to pay. As I always say, they simply dip into their caught-in-the-act-contingency-fund and

pay out a few dollars. What a deal! Here is the real deal once again. Rather than getting hung up and bent out of shape about that company, despite the erroneous information we were getting, the time and money we expended doing what we did "against” that company could have been spent “for” our own people. I always say we should not use our precious time and dollars trying to “hurt” someone else; we should use them to “help” ourselves. Idon’t wantanyone’sdiscounts. I want to buy computers from Black people. If that company wants to give something back, then let them put $1 million or so into a Black capital fund for investment in new and established Black-owned computer businesses. More slick advertisement on television is nice, and it helps pay some of the bills at a Black ad agency. But, most of that profit goes to the television networks anyway. There’s no benefit to the Black masses there. Apologies? They can keep them. What good are they to us? Haven’t we had enough of them anyway? Now they are even using this apology game against us. Jesse Helms demanded an apology from Carol Moseley Braun for protesting against the Confederate Flag. What a joke. Empty victories are occurring so frequently these days; they are mesmerizing us. We actually believe we have won something. But, the other side always wins because of our relentless quest to take our money to businesses other than our own. It matters little that they get caught doing or saying something bad about us (whether it’s true or not). We still end up getting mad, ranting and raving, demanding what we call retribution, and then going back to them after a short period of time. Who has the victory

you’re online, nor do you need a second phone line. High-speed Internet access is finally here, with research firms predicting that 10 million to 16 million homes will have cable modem service by 2002. Some analysts predict that, by the year 2001, cable modems will be the dominant Internet-access technology in U.S. households.

After ten years as a thriving business, we were ready for the next big step. So when my company was awarded a General Motors contract, it was the catalyst we needed to do business worldwide. Going global can be risky, and it means a lot to us that GM is the company working with us to get there. That's because GM doesn't simply do business with small and minority businesses. It takes an interest in our success, and makes its -i expertise available. So we can continue to help General Motors manufacture quality cars and trucks, while we begin to take our business around the world.

in that scenario? If we are serious about these kinds of incidents, why can’t we simply withhold our money for good? Why must we always giye them a way out, a way to get back,in our good graces? Is it because y/e are such a forgiving people? Is it because we just like the convenience they provide us by offering all of those goodies they sell in their stores? Or, is it because we just don’t want to see a brother or sister with a business that does well? We made some errors in our latest economic episode. The initial information received was bogus (watch out for those “Urban Legends and Myths” on the Internet.), and the results were embarrassing. However, in past incidents we saw the same brand of mismanagement when it came to the negotiations and what we gained from them. If we do not have the right people at the table we will probably come up short, as we have in the past. From now on, when there are issues like these, let’s call on those who deal with them everyday of their lives. Before we proceed, let’s call Dr. Claud Anderson and Bob Law of the Harvest Institute and Ken Bridges and A1 Wellington of the MATAH Network. Let them negotiate the deal. They are working on projects that benefit the Black collective, and they will reap maximum benefits for our people no matter what ABC or anyone else says. What the heck, call James Brown. He’s been telling us how to handle these situations for years. James Clingman is the former editor of the Cincinnati Herald newspaper. He is the founder and president of the Greater Cincinnati African American Chamber of Commerce and author of the book, “Economic Empowerment or Economic Enslavement-We have a choice. ” ( H’H’w. enter zone, com/ power).
