‘Tour of Hell’ at Oasis of Hope Church

A special ministry at Oasis of Hops Baptist Church, in conjunction with its monthly “Crazy Church,” conducted a “Tour of Hell,” a re-creation of what is imagined as the “real thing” that was acted out in several of the church rooms. Visitors were given a real scare which made the perticipante take another look of good and evil. BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - A former Ku Klux Klan member suspected in the 1963 church bombing that killed four black girls bragged that he drove the bombers to the church, according to a witness who testified before a new grand jury continuing the reopened investigation. George Andrew Ferris said he told the grand jury recently that Bobby Frank Cherry of Mabank, Texas, told him that he had been the driver of the car that took the bombers to Sixteenth Street Baptist Church. “I overheard him say the worst thing about the bombing was that the church wasn’t full. I heard him say that more than once,” Ferris, a nephew of one of Cherry’s former wives, told The Birmingham News for a story. Cherry, a former Birmingham

resident, has repeatedly denied involvement in the bombing. The News said it was unable to reach him for comment. The explosion killed Addie Mae Collins, Carole Robertson and Cynthia Wesley, all 14, and Denise McNair, II, as they were preparing for church services the morning of Sept. 15,1963. The powerful explosives blew down an outside wall of the church. Ferris said he first recalled Cherry’s statements about the bombing 20 years ago, after Robert Chambliss was convicted in the bombing. Although Chambliss is the only person found guilty in the blast, authorities have long believed he was helped by at least three other men. Ferris said he would have come forward in the 1980s, but “I didn’t

think a white man could be convicted of that bombing in Ala-

bama.”

He said he decided to talk about his testimony because he believes it will help prosecutors. “If people don’t come forward it’s not going to end,” Ferris said. “I believe the more peopje talk about it the more it’s going to help the case.” Ferris also said Cherry tried unsuccessfully to recruit him into the Ku Klux Klan in the 1970s. Ferris’ aunt, Willadean Brogden, was married to Cherry between 1970 and 1972. Ferris said he was contacted by FBI agents in September after Ms. Brogden recommended they talk to him at his San Francisco-area home. He said he testified for about 10 minutes.

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 6,1909 SALT ContimMNFfrom B1 to see how my pastor is doing.” and yet, I know I will always keep that voice and that smile in my heart. Before Pastor Smith accept^ his call to ministry at SecondChristian Church, he was “ministering” the love of God from Smith’s Big 10 • both in Lockefield and at 40th and Boulevard. When he accepted his calling, he moved from a market to a ministry. He changed product but not impact. His life has motivated and ini spired so many to wake up, get up, and move up to the next level without excuse of age or circumstances. He earned a master’s degree in his early 70s and he earned a doctoral degree in his early 80i His graduation was held at Light of the World Christian Church with the dean of United Theological Seminary, Dayton, Ohio, conferring the degree at the 11 a.m. service. Who knows hoW many he has inspired and motivated toget adegree or go back to school or move to the next level. He proved over and over again that “I can do all things through Christ” regardless of the circunistances. >- Rev. him to listen. I suggested to Todd that he stop looking for a scapegoat for the marital problems and take responsibility for what’s going on. He’d told me earlier that Janice’s tantrums make him so mad that he “sees red.” I emphasized that we cannot allow the behavior of others to dictate our reactions. If he was to have peace in the relationship it had to begin with him and a calm attitude. If he remained calm, his peaceful demeanor would show Janice that he was listening to her and she was being heard. Janice and Todd left my office pledging to put to work the simple steps we outlined. They wanted the drama to leave their marriage. I gave them a few related Bible verses from the book of Proverbs. They may help you too. Proverbs 13:3: “The one who

guards his mouth preserves his life. The one who opens wide his lips comes to ruin.” Proverbs 18:13: “Hewhogives an answer before he hears, it is folly and shame to him.” . Proverbs 25:24: “It is better to live in a comer of the roof than in the house shared with a contentious woman.” Rev. Shewn C. hire memorial on the campus I.U. in Bloomington. He was a quiet spirit, but a progressive spirit. He had visions and dreamS that God helped him to fulfill. I believe like the apostle Paul: he fought a good fight, kept the faith and finished his course, and henceforth, is laid up a crown of

righteousness.

Jimmy Smith was a saint. Hi was kind, gentle, loving and a sweet servant of the Lord who allowed the light of God to shine through. A little girl was asked by her Sunday school teacher. “What is asaintr The child answered, ‘“they are the ones iii the stained glass windows that the light comes through.” That was Jimmy Smith. If there ever was a person who could light up a hospital; nursing home, or funeral parlor* it was Jimmy Smith. As a matter of fact, someone said, “We should live our lives in such a way that even the funeral director is sorry that you ate gone.” That’s the kind of impact this humble servant of the Lord had on everyone he met. His pe^ sonality was calming. His demeanor was comforting. Hfc smile was contagious. His witness was courageous. He will be missed. He like Enoch walked with God. j! The Bible says in Hebretijft 11:5-6, “By faith Enoch wffji translated that he should not Stje death; and was not found, because God had translated hiiR: for before his translation he Htyl this testimony, that he pleased God. * “But without faith it is ii sible to please him: for he cometh to God must believe he is, and that he is a rewarder them that diligently seek him.^ He walked into the hospil nursing homes and funeral lots of this city. He walked the homes and hearts of belie everywhere. And now* I can sije him walking into heaven holding the hand of God. And so it WW with Jimmy Smith. What else ^ there to say except, “Good night, Jimmy, we will see you in tfie

morning.”

Remember, “You are the stilt of the earth and the light of tjfe world” - make a difference - yfll
