FREETOWN Continued from A1 1870. Many of those African Americans made their homes in that downtown area. To address this history that is often absent in most historical synopses, Wellington created Freetown to satisfy her own desire to teach Black history in 1982. Armed only with a small grant from the Indiana Humanities Council, Wellington assembled eight community leaders and implemented a two-month pilot project at the Indiana State Museum in the fall of 1984. The program is incorporated into the State Museum’s historical theme. “It has been a good collaboration to work with our state museum and have a permanent presence there,” Wellington added. With the museum ’ s new presence, the White River State Park moves closer to what many have already dubbed “a snapshot of the community.” With the cultural locale of Freetown, the families that often frequent the park will

now get a proper taste of the city’s rich tradition. According to White River State Park executive director William Shfewsberry, Freetown’s presence should prove to be similar to that of the Eiteljorg in its cultural presentation. “If you’re telling Indiana history, you have to include the African American' side,” said Shrewsberry, who is also the chairman of the Freetown Village board. “It’s very significant that Freetown is part of this process. Its presence continues that diversity. It is another piece that has fallen into place here.” “There’s always been a conscious decision by the state to keep Freetown included in this process,” Shrewsberry added. “This attraction is about African Americans, but it’s not for African Americans alone. This opportunity continues to give Freetown a greater opportunity and a chance for expansion they may not have had before. It moves them to a whole new level.” As Freetown Village acquaints itself with
