» (Readers, manhood is a serious matter. In our community some men are earning A+ while others Are lower than F-. I want to bring 'some balance to the inequity by 'devoting the next several column ■ 'to men. Whether you are a man, woman or a child, this column will 'offer you much to think about. Patterson, When I was a girl my father 'Sexually abused me. It went on from the time I was 5 until I was IS. Back then I was young and so confused that I thought all fathers did that with their daughters. My father is a deacon in the church and he made the abuse seem scriptural. r No one in the family ever found I ‘out for I never told. Because they r would probably never believe that f this scriptural quoting man was a • molester. Even though I am a ‘ woman now, I am experiencing problems in my life. I don’t have

positive experiences in dating. I don’t trust men in general and church men in particular, and my faith in God is just about shot. My current problem is that the family reunion is coming up soon. It stirs up memories of my past with my father. Worst of all he demands that I be a part of family celebrations on this day. I hate him and I can’t help it. Am I wrong for this? Hurting Dear Hurting, I praise the Lord that you are able to finally discuss your situation. Your pain is real. You are never wrong for experiencing pain, this is natural God-given gift that let’s us know that something is wrong. The sexual abuse that you endured caused wounds deep in your soul as well as your physical being. If you have not started yet, I recommend therapy. This is the only way you can move forward with your life. Otherwise the anger, bitterness and rage stemming from the incest will cripple your life.
With counseling you will be able to face the family reunion will a new understanding that what was done to you was not your fault. It is also important that your adult relationship with your father not mirror the past. He must understand that he no longer has control over you. It may be to your advantage to reveal the abuses to your family members. He may have abused others in addition to you. All of the victims gain strengthwhen the secret is uncovered. It is a sad reality that sexual abuse is particularly found in Christian homes. (There seems to be a connection between rigid religious beliefs and the abuse of women.) young women will be sexually molested before she is 18. There are millions of emotionally crippled women in our churches today. They refuse to get treatment, preferring to live their lives wallowing in yesterday’s pain. You deserve a better life. Prescription: You can be an overcomer instead of a sufferer. Even though you are in turmoil with your earthly father, do not forget represent your relationship with God the Father. This father will never harm you. “And now to him who is able to keep you from falling and to present you without blemish before the presence of his glory with rejoicing...” Judel:24. Rev. Shewn C.
