Candidates want Taylor case settled Recorder Staff report With the decision by current Mayor Steve Goldsmith to appeal the Michael Taylorcivil case, it will probably be up to the next mayor to settle the case. Last week, in a series of live televised interviews on WAV-TV Channel 53’s Amos Brown Show, the major candidates for mayor. Republicans Sue Ann Gilroy, Bob Parker and Karen Beck and Democrats Jocelyn Tandy-Adande and Bart Peterson were asked their views on settling the Michael Taylorcivil case. Four of the five candidates flatly told Channel S3 viewers that the Michael Taylor case should be settled immediately. Only Republican Sue Ann Gilroy refused to say. In her appearance on the Amos Brown Show, Gilroy was clearly reluctant to be pinned down on an issue that is gaining support among the city’s African-American community. Gilroy did say, “I do think we need final closure to this issue. Our community needs to get together for a possible settlement of this case.” Added Gilroy, “If elected, I will take a fresh look at the Taylor case.” Republican Karen Beck and Democrat Bart Peterson both unequivocally said the Goldsmith Administration should settle the case now. And if not, they would if elected Mayor. Republican Bob Parker also flatly said the Taylor case should be settled. “We must get the Michael Taylor case behind us,” Parker told viewers. Democrat Jocelyn Tandy- ■ Adande told viewers that “mostdefinitely we should settle the case. Settling the Taylor case would send a sign to this city and community that the Mayor (Goldsmith) wants to do the right thing.” < Almost a montW a^tv.a t^ree-^ Judge panel of the Indiana Court of Appeals unanimously upheld a Hancock Count jury’sdecisionthree , years ago that awarded over $3 million to the mother and estate of Michael Taylor. Julia Carson, D-Ind., recently praised President Bill Clinton’s call for a national dialogue on youth violence to be convened May 10. “The Littleton tragedy showed that parents need to talk to children about school, conflict, guns, the music they listen to and the TV and movies they watch,” Carson added. “The president is expanding this dialogue, bringing together the Internet and entertainment industries, the gun lobby, government and the clergy to build a national movement against youth violence.” .
