center’s challenges include paying down a roughly $64,000 deficit. “We’ll work on developing a three-to-five-year plan of special events, one-on-one solicitations and other fund-raising methods to pay down that deficit,” said SotoJimenez. Carmen Hanson-Rivera, president of Carmen Inc., a marketing and design firm, and president of El Cento Hispano’s board of directors, said, “We’re delighted to have Nelly on board as the new director of El Cento Hispano. She has outstanding skills.” Soto-Jimenez came to Indiana in 1992 to work nine months with the State’s Family and Social Services Administration as part of a National Urban Fellows program. “When I was offered the fel--lowship,” she said, “it was between Indianapolis and Phoenix. I chose Indianapolis because Phoenix already had a stable Hispanic population. I saw the opportunity to do something here the

would be newer, something I could get in on in its early stages.” Before taking her new post, Soto-Jimenez worked four years as a therapist for Pleasant Run Children’s Home, another United Way agency. Overall, Soto-Jimenez has IS years experience working with the Hispanic population including supervising nine social workers in a home-based counseling program and has worked in metropolitan and rural communities. Soto-Jimenez’s daughter from her first marriage, Zuleika Hernandez, 21, is volunteering at the center as a receptionist. Hernandez lives with her mother and step-father, Cesar, a maintenance specialist at Laidlaw Transportation. She and her brother, John, a college student in Florida, send both Mother’s and Father’s Day Cards to their mother. Soto-Jimenez and Cesar have two children of their own, both girls, ages six and one.

paign contributions for the Democratic National Council in return, when she worked as White House aide during President Clinton’s first term. Reno made the recommendation after much internal discussion about the merits of the allegations. There is no clear-cut evidence providing Herman’s involvement. Laurent Yene, an African business man made the charge last November. Yene coowned International Investments and Business Development with Vanessa Weaver, Herman’s close friend and former business partner. He alleges that they made a secret agreement with Herman which netted her 10 percent of any business she facilitated for the company by giving them access to the White House. In turn they would encourage their clients to contribute to the DNC. He further alleges that he gave Herman' $10,000 last spring and one foreign businessman made a $250,000 contribution to the Democratic party. In a statement to the Post Herman said she was disappointed and baffled by the appointment of an independent counsel but confident that investigators will conclude she did nothing wrong.
