City ready to give Colts $5 to $8 million

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Indianapolis Colts officials say the $S million to $8 million the city stands ready to hand the team to keep it in town still isn’t enough. That amount “will not permit the Colts to be competitive on and off the field,” said Michael Chemoff, executive vice president and chief financial officer for the team. smith said he’s ready to hand over the money the city’s Capital Management Board _ which manages the RCA Dome _ makes from the Colts. The city is still trying to determine the exact amount, he said. But it’s believed to be between $5 million and $8 million. Goldsmith said the city would lose that money if the Colts leave town. “I think it’s fair to consider ascribing back to the Colts revenue sources attributable to them,” he said. “We’re going to lose $8 million either way.” But Goldsmith said he won’t use tax money or funds from the city’s operating budget to entice the team to stay in Indianapolis. Colts owner Jim Irsay said the average NFL team makes from $10 million to $ 1S million in stadium revenues. Goldsmith said Irsay had indicated he wants to be at the higher end of that average. The city and Colts have been negotiating for the past two weeks, but the talks seem to be headed in different directions. Goldsmith said he got personally involved in die discussions Tuesday.

MULLIN Continued from Page 1 defend from the wing. He’ll fit right in with everybody else.” That’s exactly what Mullin wants. And he’s already sure he can help the Pacers improve on last year’s 39-43 record, when they missed the playoffs for the first time since 1989. “I’m looking to playing for Larry and playing with all die great players they have with Mark and Reggie and Rik Smits and the Davis guys. It’s really exciting to me,” Mullin said. “The times we played them, they gave us fits. They’ve got some players on their team who I dislike playing against, which is a compliment. “Reggie’s always tough to play against. When you’ve got Dale and Antonio setting screens for a guy like that... I was envious of him. Derrick was always a guy who gave me problems defensively. I played with Mark years ago, but he’s one of the guys who thinks ‘pass fust,’ which is nice. And Rik, he’s just a guy they have to double all the time.”
