Lyons was elected president of the 8.5 million member National Baptist Convention in 1994, the year Edwards was Sentenced for embezzling from a school she operated in Milwaukee. The relationship between Lyons and Edwards was called into question July 6 when Deborah Lyons was charged with setting fire to a $700,000 Florida house owned by her husband and Edwards. Lyons, married for 25 years, listed himself as unmarriec ; on the property deed. Sheriffs deputies say Mrs. ' Lyons told them she suspected her husband was having an affair with Edwards. Mrs. Lyons denied that Sunday. On another matter, an official of the Wisconsin Department of Health and Family Services said a now defunct agency that had been headed by Edwards performed “very poorly” under a 1991 contract awarded by Milwaukee County to assess convicted drunken drivers for alcohol and drug problems. Philip McCullough, who directs the department’s Bureau of Substance Abuse Services, said that, when state and county officials attempted to confiscate unpaired-driver records from Edwards’ Better Living Academy, they found none. ‘if assessments were being done on non-existent clients, you’d never know,” he said. *One of our interests was to match the referrals from the 'courts with our billings. The fact 3hat records didn’t exist didn’t ■give Milwaukee County that possibility.” A woman who answered ^Edwards’ phone Monday and who described herself as ‘Edwards’ secretary told die Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that Edwards was ill and at a hospital, 'but was expected home later.
