What is an ankylosed tooth?

Ask Dr.

Scott

By Leonard Scott, D.D.S.

Q. What is an ankylosed tooth?

A. An ankylosed tooth is one which is partly or wholly fused to where it is. The condition may not be noticed until the teeth on

either side of it have fully erupted. Other than its stunted size, the tooth can look perfectly normal because the enamel looks fine. The X-rays tell a different story. If the ankylosed tooth is a baby tooth, it must be removed to allow eruption of the permanent tooth beneath it. However, when a permanent tooth seems to be anylosed, the dentist will very likely wait and watch to see if it moves into proper position on its own. It may not represent any problems whatsoever.

HEALTH Continued from B7

Impetigo can mar new school year One item parents can add to their children’s back-to-school list is prevention of a common skin infection. Impetigo is a contagious bacterial infection that left i#itreated, can go deeper into the skin and cause complications. It is spread easily via skin-to-skin contact, especially in summer and early fall, said Dr. Moise L Levy, a dermatologist in Houston. Two bacteria can cause impetigo. Group A streptococcus causes small red spots with honey-colored crusting; staphylococcus causes small to large red blisters on the legs, face and trunk. Children who may have impetigo should see a physician. Minor scrapes and skin cuts can contribute to the infection’s

spread. For this reason, small epidemics can occur in schools at the start of the school year. Over-the counter reading glasses not for everyone Over the counter reading glasses can be helpful for people older than 40, but they do have limitations. For some middle-aged people, such reading glasses can help them focus on the fine print and relieve stress on their eyes, said Dr. Richard A. Lewis, an ophthalmologist. “They are made for the average face, which means the center of the lens may not line up properly with the eyes. An eye-care professional should make the necessary adjustments.” Also, use of such lenses should not take the place of complete, regular eye exams.
