scrapers were invented. Among the animals showcased in the film include humpback whales, seals, polar bears and wolves. Special attention is placed upon each animal to highlight what makes it unique and able to adapt to life in Alaska. Some tidbits I found interesting: • Polar bears do not hibernate like most other bears. Instead, they use the winter months to hunt seals. They are able to detect where seals are gathering through their amazing hearing which can span for 20 miles! • Wolves have 17 different facial expressions! • The humpback whale makes a 7,000-mile round-trip swim each year from its Hawaiian breeding grounds to feed in Alaska. • Seals are so thickly covered in fur and blubber that they have to cover their bodies in sand and mud to cool down. Besides showcasing the animal population in the film. Interesting tidbits about Alaska are also high-
lighted. • Alaska has 5,000 glaciers and three million lakes. * • Alaskans can fly 1600 miles non-stop on a jet for three and a half hours and never leave the state. • Texas could fit into Alaska twice over, with room to spare. • Alaska covers as many time zones as the four from Maine to California. I found this film completely fascinating and a great learning experience. If you’re like me and have dreamed of visiting this state, but short on cash, this film is a great way to visit Alaska for a minimum amount of money. Fans of Wild Kingdom and the Discovery Channel, will enjoy Alaska: Spirit of the Wild. It’s filled with breathtaking aerial views of snow-capped mountains and interesting tidbits on the wildlife that have risen to the occasion of surviving in such a harsh land. Alaska: Spirit of the Wild will play at the Cinedome through Oct. 30. Call 924-5431 for more information.
