‘The Family’ hoops it up
Rachel and Racquel Simpson and Christy Neal Last weekend’s blusteiy 30 degree winds could not chill the talent of the unstoppable team of Rachel and Racquel Simpson and Christy Neal. Coached by the twins’ father, Joe Simpson, the girls went under the name of “the Family.” The Family went 7-0 and emerged as champions of the girls “Young Guns” division of the NBA/NBC Hoop it Up three-on-three tournament.
Indiana’s unemployment rate down slightly
(AP) — Indiana’s unemployment rate for February was down slightly from the month before, state officials said Friday. February’s jobless rate of 2.8 percent was well below the national rate of S.3 percent. The state’s seasonally adjusted jobless rate was down from the 3.5 percent in January, the Department of Workforce Development said. “Indiana experienced a 1.2 percent growth rate in non-farm payroll over the past year,” department commissioner Timothy Joyce said. “Several industries have grown or remained steady during this time period.” According to the state’s monthly survey of Indiana employers, payroll employment in February totaled 2,791,000, an increase of 33,400 over the February 1996 total. Manufacturing employment totaled 671,300 in February, an increase of 3,000 from January but 2,900 less than in February 1996. Motor vehicle manufacturing accounted for 90,700 Indiana jobs, just 100 more than a year ago. Construction employment totaled 117,500 in January, an increase of 3,300 from February 1996. Service producing jobs totaled 1,997,100 in February, 11,100 more than in January and 32,600 more than February 1996. (AP) — The parent company of Indianapolis Power and Light said last Thursday it will spend more than $400 million to buy back about 12 million common shares tendered under a recent Dutch auction offer. Ipalco Enterprises Inc. said the shares it expects to buy, for $32 each, represent about 21 percent of its 57 million shares outstanding. About 12.5 million shares were tendered at or below $32> Ipalco said it expects the repurchase will have a proration factor of 95 percent on those shares. As a result, the company’s outstanding shares will be reduced to about 44.5 million. In a Dutch auction, a company sets a price range within which stockholders can tender shares. (AP) — Tokheim Corp. posted profitable results for the first quarter on Thursday, the first time it had done so in six years. The Fort Wayne-based maker of gasoline pumps said the $100,000 profit for the three months ended Feb. 28 was due to increased sales and progress in its consolidation with Frenchbased gas pump maker Sofitam International. After preferred dividends, the result was a loss of 3 cents per common shares. It compared with a loss of 13 cents per share, or $700,000, for the year-ago period. Sales rose 85 percent to $92 million from $49.5 million. This was the first full quarter including the results of Sofitam. Sales typically slow for gas dispensing equipment during the quarter as service station construction drops during cold weather, said Douglas K. Pinner, Tokheim’s chairman and chief executive officer. WARSAW, Ind. (AP) — DePuy Inc. said last Thursday that its French subsidiaiy has purchased controlling interest in the surgical instrument maker Landanger-Camus group for about $124 million. DePuy, a Warsaw-based maker of orthopaedic devices, signed an agreement with French-based Landanger-Camus on Fd>. 28. Under its terms, DePuy has purchased 1.94 million shares at an average price of $63.85. The shares amount to 90 percent of the capital in the French company. DePuy is preparing a tender offer for the remaining shares The price for the stock may change, depending on an audit of Landanger-Camus, DePuy said. Ipalco buying back up to $401 million of stock.
