the Etheridge Knight Festival of the Arts has become a city-wide institution. The festival is an annual gathering of local and national artists who come together to perform for the community and help develop other emerging artists. The event also strives to increase youth involvement in the arts, as well as the incarcerated and senior citizen population. Etheridge Knight, the poet, was bom on April 19,1931, in Corinth, Mississippi, the third of seven children. Knight served in the Korean War. During treatment for warrelated injuries, he became addicted to drugs, and was subsequently arrested for armed robbery. He was sentenced to 10-25 years in the Indiana State Prison. It was while in prison that Knight began to write poetry. His work was submitted to Pulitzer Prize winning author Gwendolyn Brooks. It was also submitted to publisher Dudley Randall. That was the beginning. Knight soon penned five books:

Poems from Prison, Belly Song, Black Voices from Prison, Bom of a Woman and The Essential Etheridge Knight, three of which were written and published during his time in prison. An active advocate of poetry as an oral art, Knight is regarded as one of the nation’s finest performers of poetry. He received numerous awards for his ability to bring poetry to life. These awards include: The Before Columbus Foundation American Book Award, fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, The National Endowment Award for the Arts, and The Shelly Award from The Poetry Society of America for his distinguished achievements in poetry. In 1990 Knight received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Martin University in Indianapolis, IN. That same year he was commissioned as the university’s first Poet Laureate. On March 10,1991,attheageof 59, Etheridge died of lung cancer. His legacy lives through the annual festival.

vocals to. He says in one of his songs on the new album, “I went from ashy to nasty to classy.” While I really don’t think that is the case, nevertheless Biggie’s album is worth a listen. Allow me to explain. I’ll start with the negative. The worst track in my opinion is the one featuring R. Kelly. (The title is so bad, I can’t even print it in the paper.) It’s crude and tasteless, and no one with an ounce of class would say the things he says in this song. That is the reason I feel Biggie’s not quite as classy as he had himself to believe. Biggie and Kelly can utilize their talents better than that monstrosity of a song. “Another,” featuring Lil’ Kim, starts off with them cursing and screaming at each other and telling of the various “activities” they’ve done to one another. The only comment I’ll make is, “get a life” no one wants to hear that nonsense. Now for die good. Biggie enlisted some of the* most talented producers in the industry, including DJ Premier,

the RZA, Easy Mo Bee and oldschooler Clark Kent. I liked most of the tracks on the CD. My particular favorites were “Kick in the Door,” “Somebody’s Gotta Die” and “The Long Kiss Goodnight” But the best track is “Notorious Thugs,” featuring Bizzy, Krayzie and Layzie Bones. Biggie even takes on a Bone Thugs persona when he raps. Overall, it’s a good effort It could have been better if he had taken the high road and disposed of those sex-filled songs I mentioned earlier. True Biggie fans won’t be disappointed. Jazz Central Station Various Artists (Encoded Jazz/N2K) There’s not too much I can say about this jazz CD collection, except that it’s excellent. It includes great artists such as Miles Davis, Joshua Redman, Roy Hargrove and Cassandra Wilson. It’s good relaxation music for those nights when your nerves. are shot from a hard day at work.
