There was no time to say goodbye. But, with heavy hearts and heads hung low, there is something to be said of how one family member feels about those who stole and looted at the crash site rather than helping to comfort
the victims.
“I think like with anything that happens, there’s a healing that must take place with people,” said Dr. Bruce Pillow. “And, there’s an intelligence behind everything that happens. If people can note that we do have a society full of people who are capable of taking advantage of someone else’s misfortune, then it puts more of a responsibility on us to love one another, and to make sure that we love every day.” Pillow, who is married to one of Hessaraki’s five sisters, Hortense, said his nephews are in shock over the loss of their mother. ’They’re just wanting to stand still and reflect on what’s happened,” he said. “The total reality has yet to set in. As for her husband, we have not talked about it. But, I’m sure I would be in the same state of mind if I had lost my wife.” a Frank A. Pace, 25, was anested on charges of leaving the scene of a fatality accident and leaving the scene of an accident causing serious bodily injury, according to Lt. Mike Spears, spokesman for the Indianapolis Police Department. Additionally, Willie E. Wright, 42, is charged with felony theft. He is believed to have stolen a purse from Hessaraki’s car. Other looters were involved, one of whom is said to have removed the woman’s wedding ring as she lay helpless. But, as police focus on apprehending others involved, Lucille Clark is focusing on and depending on strength from another power to help her through her daughter’s death. “God will take care of us,” Clark said. “If I didn’t know Him, I wouldn't know which way to go. He said He would never leave us nor forsake us, and I know that to be true. Avaneta was a Christian who really loved the Lord. She will be sadly missed, but we’ve got to go on. There’s no other way out but through the grace of God. Her memory will always be with us. “Her son (Alireza Jr.) is taking it pretty hard, but they all are. When he was told his mother was dead, he said he had a feeling that she was because he saw the white sheet over her head. But he still didn’t want to believe it.” Hessaraki’s mother-in-law, Nayfreh Kronevise, and Hazel James, her aunt, were also injured in the crash. According to Clark, James is in the hospital in intensive care, suffering from damaged lungs. She has received a blood transfusion. Kronevise is at home with a broken hip and spine, in addition to other injuries, Gark
said.
“They both just kept asking for Avaneta in the hospital, but no one told them she was dead,” Clark remembered. “When they did find out, they were both devastated.”
Joseph Simpson was re-electeil treasurer of the branch. The officers are not going to merely take up space. They will implement a civil rights agenda. “We have a tough road ahead of us, and the new officers feel optimistic about our plan of action,” said Bohannan. Plan No. 1 is to increase membership. “One of the first areas of concern is to bring everyone back home to the NAACP,” George VanSickles said. “Memberships are the key to the survival and we need everyone’s participation.” Plans are underway to obtain an office and a meeting venue for the monthly general meetings. Bohannan explained that he intends to adhere to the national NAACP bylaws and constitution with the necessary adoption for the Indianapolis community. Bohannan feels that the NAACP committee system is the most efficient way to ensure community and membership participation and to obtain input on relevant community issues. Bohannan said he will run an “open branch.” “We plan to listen, do our research and respond appropriately,” Bohannan said.
