THE HISTORY OF MARTIN UNIVERSITY
Martin Uidvereity, originally named Martin Center College, was founded by the Reverend Boniface Hardin in 1977. The founding was in response to research indicating that minorities, adults, and low-income persons are not adequately served by higher education. The barriers to higher education for these persons often are Job requirements (including changing shifts and work times), family responsibilities, age, health, failure in another institution (often for reasons other than lack of ability),transportation difficulties, or the myriad of other problems assod-
ated with the obHgMionsofttfie. At the same time, the changing workplace is making demands that employees seek more education, and many Jobs
requireacoDege degree.
Father Boniface Hardin
In 1990, the CoBege changed its name to Martin University, and in 1992 the NCA granted permission for Martin University to offer Master’s degrees in Community Psychology andUrban Ministry Studies. Martin University is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.
The Univmity derives its name firom the memory ofDr.Martin Luther King, Jr^and St Martin DePorres, two Martins who cared about the needs of people, physically, spiritually, mentally, and intellectually. Martin University is an accredited, private, not-for-profit, non-denominathmal ■wutunon.
