NFL, players association back College Fund/UNCF The College Fund/UNCF, the NFL and the NFL Players Association announced a new $1 million scholarship program which will help fund college educations at historically Black colleges and universities across America. Fifty NFL players made individual gifts of $10,000 to The College Fund to celebrate its 50th anniversary. The NFL matched each of these gifts, bringing the total to Si million. This gift to The College Fund, which will administer the scholarship program, also commemorates SO years of integration in post-World War II professional football. The recipients — known as NFL/NFLPA Fellows—each will receive scholarships for tuition assistance, books and other expenses. The scholarships are awarded for the student’s junior year and renewable for the senior year. “The College Fund is honored to team up with these SO leading NFL players, owners and Players Association officials who recognize the importance of developing strong minds as well as strong bodies,” said William Gray III, president and CEO of The College Fund. "The NFL/NFL Players Association Scholarship will make a critical difference to the students who receive scholarships, and the NFL players’ strong support of higher education sends a powerful message to young people across America.” The scholarship is supported by an advertising and publicity campaign which includes national radio and television public service announcements during NFL broadcasts and print advertisements in national magazines and NFL games programs. “We in the NFL are proud to salute the 50th anniversary of The College Fund with a gift from these 50 players who are leaders on their teams,” said NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue. “Hundreds of graduates of historically Black college and universities have had successful NFL careers. UNCF colleges have graduated more than 250,000men and women. We thank The College Fund for its role in making a quality education possible for so many.” The College Fund/UNCF is a consortium of 41 private historically Black colleges and universities. It is the oldest and most successful minority higher education assistance organization in the country. The College Fund currently administers more than 350 educational programs that give students access to higher education and career opportunities, and strengthen its member colleges. These programs include scholarship, mentoring, summer enrichment and study abroad programs, curriculum development, and faculty development funds. To date, more than 250,000 men and women have graduated from UNCF colleges and universities. “This scholarship is an excellent opportunity for NFL players and the NFL to invest in the future of America through The College Fund,” said Gene Upshaw, NFLPA executive director. “The 50 players who have contributed $10,000 each to this scholarship all are members of the NFLPA as well as UNCF Golden Circle/NFLPA contributors. They are leaders both on and off the field.” The Indianapolis Colts’ Eugene Daniel and Jim Harbaugh made $10,000 contributions to The College Fund.
