Promise Keepers plan seminars Promise Keeners, the national Christian ministry conferences excited about being men of God,”

Promise Keepers, the national Christian ministry for men, will hold leadership seminars this fall in 31 cities across the United States and Canada. Pastors, lay leaders and any man who wants to impact the lives of other men will gather this fall to learn practical ways of developing men’s small

groups and men’s ministries.

The topics will include: fathering issues, men’s ministry models, developing relationships, building groups of men into teams, and “Where are men

today?”

These topics will be taught by a distinguished group of faculty, including Ron Jenson, Bill Peel, Charles Cooper, Glenn Wagner, Dale Schlafer, Gary Oliver, Rod Cooper, Mike Silva and Ron

Rand,

Two Canadian cities have been added to the schedule since publication of the fall brochure. Meetings have been scheduled in Ottawa, Ontario and in London, Ontario, each on Nov. 3-4. “Men return from Promise Keepers summer

excited about being men of God,”

Rick Kingham, vice president of Held ministry, said. “Fall seminars follow the conferences and it’s our ministry’s avenue to come alongside the church and help it capitalize on the excitement and

motivation of the men.”

These seminars are for anyone who wants to

make a difference.

“The Men’s Ministry Leadership Seminary is designed to help men mentor and impact other men through ministry in the local church,” Dr. Rod Cooper, director of educational ministries for Promise Keepers, said. “If you have a burden for challenging and mentoring men, this seminar is for

you.”

In 1994, more than 45,(XX) men attended one of these seminars. The format is a Friday-evening, allday Saturday hands-on seminar. Registration, along with more information and a seminar brochure, is available by calling (800) 349-0588.

Payne Seminary fully accredited

Payne Theological Seminary in Wilberforce, Ohio was recently informed by the Association of Theological Schools that, as of June 1995, it is a fully accredited seminary. This action was the result of a recommendation of the Accrediting Commission of the ATS. After many decades of support by its parent denomination, the African Methodist Episcopal Church, other church leaders, seminary administration, faculty and students, the institution reached this milestone. The accreditation makes Payne the only accredited

African-American seminary in the Midwest. This represents a significant advancement in the educational opportunities for all people, but particularly for persons preparing to serve the Black church and its communities. According to ATS officials, the decision was based on the significant growth and potential reflected in denominational support, faculty, the student body and the library during the past six years. Moreover, ATS noted Payne’s consistent and fierce dedication to its mission as “The Significant

Strength” that has sustained the institution during its 150-year history. Being accredited opens many new opportunities for Payne to explore and to develop programs to meet the changing needs of the African-American community. Further, it makes Payne a major voice in determining the future shape of theological education for not only the Black church, but also the religious community in the Midwest and throughout the world. Dr. Louis Charles Harvey is president of Payne Theological Seminary.

Franklin counters Shreveport promoter’s jab

The recent pop/urban success of Kirk Franklin and the Family’s “Why We Sing” has afforded Franklin the opportunity to perform before audiences that would not normally respond to a gospel record. However, the gold-plus, across-the-board success of his debut album on GospoCentric Records has also exposed the gospel megastar to concert promoters who are not from the Christian marketplace. So, when Franklin was publicly ridiculed recently by a Shreveport, La. concert promoter, due to his cancellation of a scheduled performance on May 13, not only was Franklin given a rude awakening, he felt it his duty to respond to the “defamation.” He did so through a public relations agency, which released his side of the story. • Franklin was scheduled to perform at Shreveport’s Independence Stadium on May 13. Although Franklin did not receive his full nonrefundable performance deposit, he went to Shreveport anyway, due to his commitment to his fans and to his music ministry. According to the contract, Franklin was due on

stage no later than noon because he had an evening performance in Arlington, Texas. However, upon his arrival at the venue, Franklin did not receive the total balance of the monies due him and he was told he would not be appearing until 2:30 p.m. Since this delay constituted a breach of contract, Franklin had no choice but to cancel his appearance in order to make his Arlington date. Franklin feels it necessary he set the record straight. “As a gospel performer, I take my music ministry very seriously,” says Franklin. “The recent success of ‘Why We Sing’ has given us mass exposure, for which we are truly grateful and blessed. However, the Shreveport situation has given me a greater understanding of the other side of the music business, since I am used to the Christian way of doing things. “I hope my fans in Shreveport understand that I would never cancel a concert unless it was extremely necessary. My prayer is that we will be able to minister Shreveport at a later date and time.”
